On Tuesday, Nov. 2 in Madison, N.J., the Elizabethtown College men’s soccer team traveled to face off against Drew College in the Landmark Conference championship game. Etown fell to Drew 2-1 in a fierce double overtime Tuesday night in the Landmark Conference.
The Blue Jays finish the season with nine wins, six losses and two ties while the Drew Rangers move to nine wins, seven losses and one tie overall.
Some of the highlights of the game were as follows: first-year Pedro Guizardi scored his third goal of the season and junior Jefferey Bennett tallied his first assist of the year.
Meanwhile, sophomore Matthew Agudelo scored both goals for Drew, one being his first of the season. Junior Patrick Catillo assisted the game-winner for the Rangers.
After a scoreless and intense first half, Drew scored the first goal of the game. Earning a corner kick on the right side in the 68th minute, Agudelo stepped up and kicked a service to the back goal post, and sneaked it just inside the far post, giving the Rangers the 1-0 advantage.
The Blue Jays continued to push for the tying goal and found it in the 84th minute. After earning a corner kick on the right side, Bennett drove a cross to the center of the box. Guizardi rose up and headed it towards the goal, beating senior goalkeeper Callum Erlenborn and tying the score at one.
The game remained tied all the way to the second overtime when Drew dumped a throw into the Blue Jays’ penalty box. The ball bounced and then came to the feet of Catillo who attempted a shot but was blocked by the goalkeeper. Agudelo, however, collected the rebound and one-timed into the back of the net for the game winner.
Junior Kelvin Del Cid made six saves on 10 shots. Erlenborn made six saves on 15 shots for the win.
Tonight was the final game for seniors Nick Pliny, Thomas Knox III, Massimo Mazzella, Garrett Winchella, Ed Rainey and Gio Van Heesewijk and graduate student Adam Bailey.
