Athlete of the Week: Victor Witkofsky

Victor Witkofsky is a junior athlete. He is an arm wrestler who trains with Lethal Arms, a gym that works to actively train arm wrestlers. Lethal Arms is located outside of Harrisburg, Pa. He recently participated in two tournaments. One of the tournaments was in state and one was in New Jersey, which was on Sunday, Nov. 5. He won both tournaments with his right hand. After the New Jersey tournament, he has been healing from some injuries. Once healed, he will begin to prepare for his next tournament, which is supposed to take place next month.

Witkofsky  is looking forward to competing again next semester. When asked what his favorite part of arm wrestling is, he said, “My favorite part about competing is that after the matches the people who you go up against usually go and talk to you. It’s fun to learn about them, such as where they are from, how old they are and how long they have been in the sport. In the summer, I beat a guy who came over from Maine and he was 38 years old. He was very interesting to talk to.”

Another reason that Witkofsky loves arm wrestling is that it is a much more competitive sport than meets the eye. The reason he got into it and stayed so long with it was his competitiveness: “The desire to win against my dad. Since middle school I was trying to win, and every time I lost, I kept looking up how to win, and then through videos on YouTube of professionals training and competing, I found a love for the sport. It is so much more technical than what meets the eye. Every single type of pressure, angle, rotation, etcetera matters. The complexity of everything is amazing to me. Every practice, I learn at least three new things.”

Victor said that becoming an arm wrestler is exciting, but he also warned that it can be a painful sport. He also mentioned that if people wanted to start an arm wrestling club, he would be more than happy to start one.
