A Look Back in Etown Sports History: 2 Years Ago, Jays make History as Men’s Soccer Clenches First Landmark Championship

A little over two years ago on Halloween 2018, Elizabethtown College men’s soccer made history as they beat Moravian College 2-1 in the Landmark Conference Championship Semifinal.

Moravian scored and took a lead early, but the Blue Jays’ goalkeeper, senior Brian Gately, denied any further shots. Senior Gilbert Waso and sophomore Clark Williamson both scored to give Etown the upper hand and ultimately win the match. Senior Danny Sullivan and sophomore Eli Perry also assisted with the winning goals.

The Jays went on to play in the NCAA Division III Championship tournament for the first time in two years on Nov. 10, 2018 against Williams College. They won in another close game, again 2-1, to advance them to the next round of playoffs, with first-year Jorge Sanchiz scoring the game winning goal. Brian Gately was also on top of his game gatekeeping the goal, as he made five saves.

Unfortunately, despite their long run, the Jays were eliminated in a 5-2 loss against nationally-ranked State University of New York Cortland Nov. 11, 2018.
