Student Senate: The Jay Truck returns

Student Senate met for their weekly meeting Thursday, Feb. 23 at 3:45 p.m. in Hoover 212.

The meeting began with a Special Order by Blake Reed who spoke on the Power of One Day. The Power of One Day is Elizabethtown College’s annual 24-hour day of giving in which the individuals are encouraged to donate to the College to further its funding for students. This year’s Power of One Day will take place on March 21.

Moving into Administrative Reports, Associate Dean of Students for Community Living Jenn Crowder welcomed the new Area Coordinator for Founders and Brinser Ashley Blake.

Dining Services Manager Austin Benner reported that the Jay Truck will be open on March 17 and 18 from 11 p.m.- 2 a.m.

Director for the Center for Community and Civic Engagement Javita Thompson reported that they will be celebrating International Women’s Day on March 1 along with Women’s History Month all March long.

On March 1, in the upstairs of the BSC from 11a.m.-1 p.m. students will be able to enter basket drawings, take photos with female leaders of the campus and a service opportunity will be available in collaboration with the Etown Kindness Club in the Tower Room.

There will also be a menstrual product drive that will run all month long in collaboration with It’s On Us, YDSA and Student Senate. Products will benefit the Blue Jay Pantry.

Spring Day of Service will take place on Friday, March 31. This year’s projects will consist of making school kits and blankets for children in the community. The school kits will be donated to Unto, Church World Service (CWS) and The Joshua Group. The blankets made will be donated to the James Biever Police-Community Alliance to comfort children being transported in police cars. Moving into the Executive Cabinet Report, President Madison Holmberg reported that the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) meeting has been set for March 16 in Gibble Auditorium.

Publicity and Marketing Chairperson Jessica Piergallini announced that the Senator of the Month is Class of 2026 Representative Francesco Mancini-Menditto.

Moving into Committee updates, the Transition Committee reported that the voting on the new Constitution will open Friday, March 24.

A Point of Parliamentary inquiry was motioned on whether the new Constitution would need to first pass an internal vote before being pushed out to the student body for a vote. The ruling was made by the Parliamentarian that it would need to go through an internal vote. A motion was then made to push this discussion to the end of New Business.

Moving into Class Updates, Class of 2026 President Elsa Woodarek reported that the class is working to plan a trivia night for April.

Class of 2025 President Emma Sager reported that the class will be having their buddy meeting on Monday, Feb. 27, in which every Senator is encouraged to bring a buddy. Sager reported that they are continuing to make progress on a proposal letter for their advocacy project of well-being.

Moving into New Business, the Legislation Committee presented seven new amendments to the Constitution. All amendments were reviewed and voted on being voted on all together. The vote both passed for the amendments to be voted on together, along with the amendments themselves passing the vote.

The Publicity and Marketing Committee then presented the rebrand of the Senate Logo. They opened up the floor for comments and suggestions to the logos they had created thus far. The committee will continue to work on finalizing a new logo.

The discussion of whether the Student Assembly Constitution would automatically be sent out or if an internal vote would need to occur was brought back into discussion. The original working for the referendum voted on in April 2022 was then brought into review. The Parliamentary ruling still stood that it would need to go through an internal vote first.

A motion was then made to move the discussion into an Executive Session. The motion was then voted on and passed. Another vote was then held which pushed the discussion into an Executive Session.

Student Senate’s next meeting will be held on Thursday, April 16 in Gibble Auditorium at 3:45 p.m. in which the SLT will be present. Student Senate meetings are open for the entire campus community.
