Student Senate: New policy about scheduling exams before finals announced

Student Senate met for their weekly meeting Thursday, March 31 at 3:45 p.m. in Hoover 212.

The meeting began with student comments and announcements in which Class of 2025 Representative Amelia Whittmeir reminded everyone of the Hide-n-Seek club event on April 2 starting at 5 p.m. in Gibble Auditorium.

Class of 2025 Representative Alexis Sheetz reported that the Academic Council reached the agreement that the new policy regarding exams given around finals is that no in-class assessment can be given that are worth two-thirds a letter grade given three days before a given exam.

Moving into Executive Cabinet reports, Executive President Andrew Furman reported that it was decided on to cancel the Senior Leadership Team meeting originally scheduled for April 7. They are working to have Elizabethtown College President Betty Rider come for a special order to the start of the meeting.

Executive Treasurer Kyle Cappucci reported that the finance committee approved two club funding requests, for Colleges Against Cancer and Hide-n-Seek Club.

Club Chairperson Alex D’Amico reported that the Derby Fest committee is continuing to meet to finalize plans for the event. D’Amico also reported that the committee is working on awards for the clubs banquet ceremony on April 14.

Publicity and Marketing Chairperson Jess Freels reported that the committee has finished their ideation sessions with the classes about how to help better advertise what the Student Senate is. The committee will be brainstorming how to move forward with the information gathered.

The committee also voted on Senator of the month, in which the award went to Class of 2022 Representative Jared Beachy.

Moving into committee updates, Business Communications Chairperson Jared Beachy announced that the committee has the first confirmed food truck for the Derby Fest, which is Tri-County BBQ.

Advocacy and Service Chairperson Madison Holmberg reminded everyone that there are still available spots to sign up for Day of Service on Friday, April 1.

Holmberg also reminded students of the last service opportunity of the year, which is Etown partnering with Church of the Brethren to help make suncatchers on April 6.

For the Menstrual Product Ad-Hoc Committee, Sydney Detky updated that they have just completed one month of the pilot program of having menstrual products in the bathrooms of the BSC.

The initial cost was $130 dollars for 500 tampons, 228 pads and 10 baskets. On average, 16 tampons and 13 pads are being used a week, so the supplies could last for 13 more weeks.

Detky encouraged students to give them feedback so they can report back to Vice President for Operations and Auxiliary Services Bob Kerin.

Moving into class updates, Class of 2025 President Issac Kraenbring announced that the class is having a de-stressing event Friday, April 1 in the Birdcage from 6 to 8 p.m.

Class of 2024 President Holmberg announced that the class is currently working to finish planning the event for Earth Day.

The meeting was then moved in an executive session.

Student Senate meets weekly on Thursday at 3:45 p.m. in Hoover 212. Meetings are open to  the campus community.
