Student Senate: Homecoming preparations begin

Student Senate met for their weekly meeting Thursday, Sept. 22 at 3:45 p.m. in Hoover 212.

The meeting began with swearing in new Senators for the Class of 2026.

Then, moving into administrative reports Dean of Students & Executive Director for College Diversity, Equity and Belonging Nichole Gonzalez announced the first desserts before dinner with the dean will be held Tuesday, Sept. 27 at 4:30 p.m. in the Blue Bean. This is a time for students to chat with Gonzalez about any questions, comments, concerns or ideas they may have.

Associate Dean of Students for Community Living Jenn Crowder announced that health and safety inspections started this week and will run through Oct. 3.

Crowder also reported that the discussion of updating the guest policy is coming to an end. They are working to finalize an online form and hope to begin allowing outside guests in October.

Housing will remain open over fall break which takes place Oct. 6-9.

Associate Director of Employer Relations Maureen Brown reported that the Career Development Center hosted a business meet and greet on Sept. 27 from 3-5 p.m. in the Hoover Lobby. 

Center for Community and Civic Engagement Director Javita Thompson reported that sign ups for Into the Streets are now open.

Moving into Executive Cabinet reports, Executive President Madison Holmberg reported that the Jay Truck survey received 663 responses. Executive Vice President Jeremy Reel and Holmberg will be meeting with Director of Dining Services Eric Turzai to discuss how to move forward.

Publicity and Marketing Chairperson Jessica Piergallini reported that the big project the committee will be working on is to redesign the Student Senate logo.

Moving into committee updates, Traditions Chairperson Abigail Lindasy reported that Homecoming court nominations are open via Canvas under the Student Senate page. Homecoming court is only open to current students.

Lindsay also reported that all clubs should have received an email that has a Google forms link to sign up for the Homecoming activities fair. The form is due Oct. 1.

Moving into class update, Class of 2025 President Emma Sager reported that they have chosen Nov. 11 as the date of Formal Jay.

Class of 2023 President Brooke Charria reported that the senior gift was revealed. Accessibility ramps will be built to replace the steps at the Dell gazebo. They have also planned the first senior event in which seniors are able to sign up to be bussed over to Hershey vineyards. Everyone will receive a voucher for the onsite food trucks. Sign ups will be released soon.

Moving into new business, Acting Executive Treasurer Griffen McClaren presented the Student Senate budget for the academic year.

A motion was then made to vote on the budget, in which the vote did not pass.

A motion was then made to table the budget discussion until the next meeting, in which the vote passed.

Advocacy and Service Vice-Chair Christy Martin did a presentation in regards to what it means to be an advocate.

The next order of business was to run external committee elections. It was motioned to move this under executive session in which the vote passed.

Student Senate meets weekly on Thursday at 3:45 p.m. in Hoover 212. Meetings are open to all the campus community.
