Student Senate: Club registration begins

Student Senate met for their weekly meeting Thursday, Nov. 3 at 3:45 p.m. in Hoover 212.

The meeting began with a special order that began with a discussion led by Senior Director of Financial Aid Melodie Jackson to discuss financial aid in regards to RAs.

Moving in Administrative Reports, Dean of Students & Executive Director for College Diversity, Equity and Belonging Nichole Gonzalez reminded students of the launch of the Blue Jay Blue Print Program.

Gonzalez will also be holding the next Desserts Before Dinner with the Dean on Monday Nov. 7 at 4:30 p.m. in the Blue Bean Cafe. 

Assistant Director of Student Activities and Commuter Engagement Brooke Hollinger reported that new club registration is open Nov. 1-15. The form can be filled out via JayWeb.  

In order to register as a club, you must have the following: full cabinet which consists of a President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer; an advisor that is a full time faculty or staff member; four general members; and a constitution. 

Center for Community and Civic Engagement Director Javita Thompson reported that the office will be hosting its first winter break trip in over two years.

The trip will run from Dec. 9-14, where the group will travel to New Bern, N.C. to work with the Craven County Disaster Recovery Alliance to help remodel homes that were affected by past hurricanes. Deadline to register is Nov. 13 and the cost of the trip is $210. 

The office will also be working in collaboration with Student Senate on “Angel Tree” with more information to be released soon. 

Moving into Executive Cabinet reports, Executive President Madison Holmberg reported that the Executive Cabinet will be working to sort through the questions the Class Senates came up with for the Senior Leadership Team meeting.

Student Groups Chairperson Isaac Kraenbring reported that trunk or treat was a success with a great turnout from the community.  He also stated that brainstorming has already begun on how to make improvements for next year. 

Moving into committee updates, Traditions Chairperson Abigail Lindsay reported that all 380 mugs have been signed up for. Students who signed up for a mug should be on the lookout to receive a confirmation email. 

Moving into class updates, Class of 2025 President Emma Sager reported that their first bring a buddy to Senate day had a great turnout. They were able to hear concerns regarding Dining Services and parking problems.

Sager also reminded everyone that Formal Jay is less than two weeks away, and tabling for tickets will begin soon. 

Class of 2024 President Lindsay reported that the red bins for students to place pumpkins in are now outside all of the residence buildings. The pumpkins cannot be rotten or have paint on them as they will be taken to a local farm and used for animal feed. 

Moving into Old Business, the Legislation Committee presented amendments, the first being that those who sit on the Judicial Review Committee will remain anonymous, and the second being adding a reason for missing a meeting could be for a religious observation.

A motion was then made to vote on the amendments, in which the vote passed

Moving into New Business, a presentation was done explaining what Robert’s Rules are and the importance they play in an organization like Student Senate. They allow for less personal information to come into play and bring a sense of formality to the meetings. 

The meeting was then motioned to be moved in Executive Session in which the vote passed.

Student Senate meets weekly on Thursday at 3:45 p.m. in Hoover 212. Meetings are open to all the campus community.
