The meeting began with the Oath of Office for the newly elected class representative for the Class of 2023. With this step taken, Student Senate is now full.
After the oath, the meeting had only two administrative reports. The reports were cut back from the normal number, since the agenda was anticipated to be a time-consuming one.
Dean of Students & Executive Director of Diversity, Equity and Belonging Nichole Gonzalez gave her normal report for Student Life, as well as the report for the Office of Diversity, Equity and Belonging. Gonzalez spoke on the importance of the Jay’s App for communicating events to the whole campus, as well as upcoming events for Hispanic Heritage Month.
The other administrative report was given for the Office of Student Activities. Rina Carpenter announced the activities hosted by OSA for the upcoming weekend. They also spoke about club registration, stating that clubs are starting to officially be approved and club locker keys have begun being returned.
With minimal executive cabinet reports aside from a few internal announcements, the meeting then moved into the bulk of the agenda – committee elections.
Student Senate held 11 elections for various internal committees, mainly for the Class of 2025 since the other classes held their elections in the spring. Internal committees are composed only of student senators and include topics like traditions, finance and legislation.
Senate then held 13 elections for external committees. These committees are formed by the College, but include student representation that senators fill. This includes committees like Academic Council, Religious Life Committee and Parking Appeals.
The meeting concluded after committee elections.
Student Senate meets weekly Thursdays at 3:45 p.m. in Hoover 212. Meetings are open to anyone in the College community.
