Student Senate met Thursday, April 1 at 3:45 p.m. for their weekly Zoom meeting, but this meeting was structured a bit differently.
Since Student Senate is wrapping up their term, they are focusing a lot of their meeting time on internal affairs to prepare for next year. The April 1 meeting contained just Executive Cabinet reports and the final three elections for next year’s Executive Cabinet.
Last week, a school-wide election was held for the four Executive Cabinet officer positions. During his report, Executive President Matthew Hetrick shared the results. Sophomore Andrew Furman won the Executive President election, junior Christina Schnee won her re-election for Executive Vice President, sophomore Gavin O’Brien won the Executive Secretary election and junior Kyle Cappucci won his re-election for Executive Treasurer.
Elections Chairperson senior Allie Melnikoff reminded senators that applications to run for next year’s Student Senate were live until midnight Tuesday, April 13. Class officer elections will run first and then class representative elections will follow. All new senators will be sworn in during Student Senate’s April 22 meeting.
Senior and Publicity and Marketing Chairperson Gio Zapata closed out reports. He announced March’s Senator of the Month as senior Meghan Kenney for her work on the senior class gift. Zapata also announced that the Class of 2022 senate won the Spotlight Senator Award for their work on the Junior Senior dance, despite its cancellation.
Following reports, the meeting moved onto the three internal elections for next year’s Executive Cabinet. Sophomore Alex D’Amico won his re-election for Student Groups Chairperson, first-year Gabby Sewell won Elections Chairperson and junior Jessica Freels won Publicity and Marketing Chairperson. These three will join the five officers Hetrick announced earlier to make up next year’s Executive Cabinet.
Student Senate also held an atypical meeting Thursday, April 8. This meeting was their semesterly Senior Leadership Team meeting.
During this meeting, members of the Senior Leadership Team gave reports, and senators and guests were able to ask questions about a variety of topics. This meeting’s topics included the College’s response to COVID-19, the longevity of majors, future construction projects, summer housing and general questions.
Student Senate meets weekly at 3:45 p.m. Thursdays over Zoom. Meetings are open to all members of the Elizabethtown College community.
