Student Senate

Student Senate met Thursday, March 11 at 3:45 p.m. for their weekly meeting over Zoom. The meeting began with administrative reports, where Vice President for Student Life Dr. Celestino Limas began by handing over the floor to Vice President for Enrollment Management John Champoli and Senior Director of Admissions Adam Smith.

The two provided an update on enrollment for the upcoming year, as well as an update on prospective student tours. Champoli told senators that enrollment is up compared to the same date last year. Then, Smith informed that starting Monday, March 15 tours will be taken through the Bowers Center for Sports, Fitness and Well-being. They are “touchless tours” led by either a Blue Jay Ambassador or the coach of a sports team.

Champoli concluded that if anyone sees a visiting family not following the College’s guideline then they should reach out to admissions. All visitors through admissions are required to be temperature checked and follow all campus guidelines, including wearing a mask.

Limas then gave his report, which mainly centered around answering questions about commencement. Senior Meghan Kenney asked where the number three came from in regards to each student getting three guest tickets. Limas explained it is based on the number of people that can fit safely on the Dell.

Limas did not have all answers, but told senators that he would find them out. He also mentioned the FAQ page on the website as a good place to find answers.

Limas also spoke about interhall visitation. As of this meeting, the College’s COVID-19 Task Force recommends not allowing it, but it will be reevaluated.

During executive cabinet reports, Elections Chairperson Allie Melnikoff announced that scholarships sponsored by the Student Senate are now taking applications. Submissions can be done through Canvas until Monday, April 5.

The meeting then moved into class updates. First-year class president Maddi Holmberg told senators that their class has started a book club feature on their Instagram.

Student Senate also met Thursday, March 18 via Zoom. Limas began with his report. He told senators that the FAQ page for commencement has been updated so questions from the previous week should be answered there. He also explained that tickets cannot be exchanged because of how the bubbles of families will be set-up.

Director of Community Living Jenn Crowder introduced Kayshen Morel as a new Assistant Director for Community Living. Morel will work with their diversity and inclusion program, as well as oversee the Founders Residence Hall.

Assistant Director of Community Living Rina Carpenter made some announcements for the Office of Student Activities. OSA is currently hosting try-outs for co-hosting Mx. Etown. Students can sign-up as a pair and complete their try-out over Zoom.

Carpenter also announced details for this year’s Thank Goodness Its Spring (TGIS). The theme is Jaychella and will be held Friday, April 30. The day will include events such as a cornhole tournament, succulent pot painting and a concert with the a capella groups, Mad Cow Improv and Emotion.

During student comments, fifth-year Hannah Paymer asked about rising fifth-years that want to live on campus. Associate Director of Community Living Jennifer Azevedo told Paymer that interested fifth-years should reach out to her so that Community Living can help them figure it out.

The meeting’s business consisted of nominations for Executive Cabinet Officer positions for the next academic year. The positions are elected by a school-wide vote.

Student Senate meetings weekly at 3:45 p.m. Thursdays over Zoom.
