Student Senate met Thursday, March 4 for their weekly meeting over Zoom. The meeting began with the Oath of Office for the new first-year representative.
Then, Vice President for Student Life Dr. Celestino Limas began administrative reports. He encouraged students to attend the upcoming feedback sessions for the Strategic Plan. The sessions will be held Tuesday, March 9 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Wednesday, March 10 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m., all in the Bowers Center for Sports, Fitness and Well-being fieldhouse.
Executive Sous Chef Barry Hornberger gave a report for Dining Services. He announced a new nutrition website for Dining Services, where students can see the nutritional information for the food being served in the Marketplace. The site is a work in progress, as Hornberger says he hopes to include food from other places on campus as well. The website can be reached through the Dining Services’ page, under the Weekly Menu tab.
Director of Campus Security Andrew Powell told senators that Campus Security provided a bit of a grace period with parking restrictions, but now they are ticketing again.
Director of Counseling and Health Needs Bruce Lynch sent in his report, so senior Executive President Matthew Hetrick read it for senators. He reported that Counseling Services can now provide telehealth counseling to students in Maryland.
During student comments and announcements, sophomore Gavin O’Brien said students felt like the day off Wednesday, March 3 was not actually a day off, with some even saying they were given extra homework to make up for missing class. Limas said that any student in that position should first reach out to their faculty member to discuss it, and if that conversation does not go well then they should talk to the Dean of their school.
During executive cabinet reports, many of the members told senators to reach out to them if they are interested in running for their position later in the semester.
Sophomore Clubs Chairperson Alex D’Amico announced that club council will be held Wednesday, March 17 at 6 p.m. over Zoom.
Senior Publicity and Marketing Chairperson Gio Zapata announced junior Christina Mercincavage as the February Senator of the Month for her work planning Junior Senior.
Zapata then provided the only order of business on the agenda – discussing senate apparel.
The meeting closed with class updates. First-year class president Maddi Holmberg reported that the Class of 2024 started their sticker fundraiser.
Junior class president Jessica Freels announced the Class of 2022’s new initiative to promote their advocacy work on accessibility across campus. The juniors are working with Director of Disability Services Lynne Davies, as well as Facilities Management and Campus Security, on the Blue Jay Barrier Busters initiative. The 2022s will be posting more information on their social media accounts.
Freels also announced that updates on Junior Senior will happen in the coming week.
Student Senate meets weekly at 3:45 p.m. Thursdays over Zoom. Meetings are open to all Elizabethtown College students, faculty and staff.
