Student Senate

Student Senate met Thursday, Feb. 25 for their weekly meeting over Zoom.

The meeting began with a special order from Assistant Director of Annual Giving Liz Moyer. She spoke to senators about the Power of One Day. The annual day of giving will take place Tuesday, March 23. The goal is to have 1,899 participants. Moyer asked senators for their help spreading the word and encouraging people to give gifts.

The meeting then moved into administrative reports, starting with Vice President for Student Life Dr. Celestino Limas. He told senators that the student Daily Digital Health Report compliance has decreased since last week.

First-year Darren Osborn-Hodges asked if the Daily Digital Health Report needs to be completed everyday if a person is not on campus everyday, such as commuters. Limas stated the report needs to be completed every day someone is on campus, but said he recommends completing it everyday to be in the habit.

Fifth-year Hannah Paymer asked a follow-up about if a residential student has to complete it everyday even if they go home for some time, like a weekend. Limas answered that the report is actually tied to access points on campus, so a student will not be punished for not completing it if their ID card is not used that day. Although, Limas again recommended that students complete it everyday to form the habit and help with the accuracy.

Despite the decrease in Daily Digital Health Report completions, Limas said that, as of the start of the meeting, there were still zero positive surveillance tests.

Limas also spoke to a new job opening in Facilities Management. Facilities is working to form an on-call student snow crew to assist in any future snow removal. The position will pay $15/hour. Interested students can contact Office/Work Station Manager for Facilities Management Bob Mrgich for more details, or check the College’s HR website where the position will be posted the week of March 1.

Executive Sous Chef Barry Hornberger did not have a report for Dining Services, but did hear student comments about finding some expired products in the Jay’s Nest. Hornberger said he will have a conversation with people who work there.

Assistant Director of Community Living Rina Carpenter gave the Office of Student Activities’ report. They announced that OSA will host Mx. Etown Friday, March 19. Mx. Etown is a revamped gender-neutral version of Mr. Etown, the all male beauty pageant held in past years. Carpenter said nominations are open until midnight Monday, March 8. After that, voting will occur to choose a winner for each residential building.

Director of Campus Security Andrew Powell did not have a report beyond telling senators that they are working to fix a few problems with the text reminder system for the Daily Digital Health Report.

During Mrgich’s report, Paymer asked about rumored water damage and “other hazards” in the Founders Residence Hall. Director of Community Living Jennifer Crowder explained that the College had an electrician look at all the electrical boxes, as some were making loud humming noises. Crowder said the electrician did not find any water damage to them and put some extra insulation around the boxes to dampen the noise.

During Executive Cabinet reports, junior Executive Treasurer Kyle Cappucci said travel fund reimbursements should be hitting students’ mailboxes soon.

The meeting finished with class updates. First-year Class President Maddi Holmberg announced first-year Joanna Shultz as their new Class Treasurer.

Senior Class President Rachel Freed said the senior class gift will be revealed soon.

Student Senate meets weekly at 3:45 p.m. Thursdays over Zoom. Meetings are open to all Elizabethtown College students, faculty and staff.
