Security rules small dorm fire as accident

A fire occurred in Founders Residence Hall, Building D, on Friday, Jan. 13 around 5 p.m.

The fire occurred in a trash can in a hall of the building. No students were harmed as a result of the fire, but some property was damaged. The fire melted the trash can, carpet and wall paint in the surrounding area.

Campus Security was alerted about the fire and arrived at the scene, entering the building to extinguish the fire. To avoid any injuries, Campus Security evacuated all residents from the building. The cause of the fire is unknown; however, it is believed that the fire was an accident, according to Campus Security. Residents were allowed to return to their rooms as soon as the fire was extinguished and the affected area was cleaned.

Mark Zimmerman, the director of facilities management, was notified and briefed on the situation. Since it was a minor fire and no major damage occurred, there was no response from the fire company. The situation was controlled by Campus Security, Residence Life and the Facilities Residence Hall Supervisor.
