College receives consultation on cleaning, facility maintenance

Elizabethtown College announced March 8 that the Environmental Services Department is partnering with Hillyard “in an effort to enhance [the College’s] buildings” through Hillyard’s consultation services. Hillyard is nationally recognized as a manufacturer of cleaning chemicals and a distributor of facility maintenance products.

Hillyard representatives first began their consultation the week of March 8. Throughout March, representatives will be conducting forensic analysis of facilities and the College’s cleaning program, in addition to using their database technologies. The College noted that the purpose is to improve the College’s operations.

According to Hillyard’s website, they deliver results through evaluations of current cleaning programs, standardization of cleaning programs and implementation of new methods, training for cleaning staff and providing tools for managing quality and procurement.

Hillyard also focuses on being “good environmental stewards” and helping “preserve natural resources for future generations” by using sustainable products, such as Green Seal certified products and USDA certified bio-based products, amongst other partnerships and packaging methods.

“The Hillyard representatives will be reviewing our entire custodial cleaning process in detail.  They will be looking at every surface and appliance that we are currently cleaning, in every building on campus,” Interim Vice President of Operations John Beckvold said. He also noted how throughout the years, Hillyard has provided “these detailed review services at no cost many of their other customers.”

Throughout the consultation, the College hopes to gain more information about their cleaning processes, as well as increase effectiveness and efficiency amongst their custodial services.

“This evaluation and its subsequent initiatives are especially timely as we continue to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic,” the College said in its weekly Campus News March 8.

In accordance with the College’s guidelines, all Hillyard representatives are required to follow the campus health and safety protocols for visitors. As such, the Hillyard representatives were not tested for COVID-19 prior to arriving on campus. Representatives also received background clearances.

Previously, the College has utilized Hillyard as its supplier for cleaning chemicals and facility maintenance products. However, this is the first time that the College will be utilizing Hillyard’s consultation services. Consultation services are included in the College’s contract with Hillyard.

“It is best practice to assess and measure our cleaning procedures and processes on a timely basis to ensure we provide the best services possible,” Beckvold said.

Hillyard’s review will then provide the College with results to see what improvement can be made to the College’s current custodial services.
