Vocalign, Elizabethtown College’s all-gender inclusive a cappella group, hosted their annual combo show on Saturday February 17th, highlighting Melica, Etown’s all-female identifying a cappella group, Phalanx, Etown’s all-male identifying a cappella group, and three guest a cappella groups: Chromatic from Millersville University, Under a Rest from West Chester University and High Street Harmonix also from West Chester University. This is the second combo show following the gap during the pandemic.
“I enjoyed being able to support my school’s talented a cappella groups,” Sarah Carney, second-year social work major, said. “I loved Chromatic’s performance and I always look forward to Vocalign’s ‘Somebody to Love.’” Carney also expressed interest in Melica’s Girl’s Night Out and the A&T Benefit three weeks prior.
“[The combo show] was such a great way to gather with fellow students from Etown as well as other schools,” Kara Bidgood, a first-year early childhood education major said. “It was an enjoyable evening for all!” she said.
Saturday’s show began and ended with Vocalign and featured songs like “Creep” by Radiohead performed by Chromatic, Alice Merton’s “No Roots” performed by Under a Rest, and Etown favorites such as Phalanx’s upbeat “Brown-Eyed Girl,” Melica’s crowd-pleaser “Wings” and Vocalign’s favorably aforementioned “Somebody to Love.” While Bidgood and Carney had positive feedback, even students not in attendance were aware of Vocalign’s reputation for successful shows.
“Unfortunately, I [was] home for the weekend but I know Vocalign never disappoints!” second-year marketing major Chloe Cádiz López said.
A similar sentiment was expressed by second-year Spanish education major Marie Crugnale. “I had a lot of assignments this week [but] I wish I could’ve been there! I know a lot of people in the music groups on campus.” Crugnale said she felt swayed to attend the next combo show.
Overwhelmingly positive feedback surrounded the event and groups performing, leaving the question: just how will Vocalign top this performance next year? To put it quite simply, we have no other choice but to wait and find out.
