TikTok activist speaks at Etown

Bowers Writers House hosted famous TikTok user “Aunt Karen” on Oct. 9. Denise Bradley is a 32-year-old social rights activist from Detroit, Mich. who assumed the role as “Aunt Karen.” Inspired by the 2020 Presidential Election and the racial tension across social media platforms, Bradley wanted to take a stand against misinformation and discrimination. “Aunt Karen” and her social justice efforts have established a platform of 1.3 million followers; the following continues to grow daily as she pushes for accountability against racist ideals and persons.

Bradley was formally in Human Resources (HR). As a HR employee, Bradley noticed that she was not a person that she wanted to be. For example, Bradley explained that she would police people or fire someone due to a policy that she did not support.

She decided to leave this pathway to follow her own beliefs and opinions. Bradley became a social media activist in 2019 because of the racial tension in society. Originally, creating TikToks was only a fun way to pass time; however, when on social media, Bradley realized that there was no accountability for those creating racial tension. She claimed to witness individuals saying racist remarks on social media with no consequence.

When COVID-19 hit, Bradley decided to focus her videos on advocating against social injustices and racism. Now, creating this content on TikTok is her full time career.

Inspired to make a difference, Bradley began creating videos that stood-up for minority groups or persons.

“I started calling out videos that I saw on the internet and people started calling me a ‘Karen’ which has a negative sense. I said, ‘Why don’t I take that name and brand it?’ Be a Karen that stands up for the little guy, against racism, transphobia, homophobia, all of those things,” Bradley explained.

She wanted to teach about how racism looks in various situations. Bradley also aims to help others realize that they can stand-up against ideals or situations that they do not agree with.

Bradley noted that her discussions are ones that people are hesitant to talk about. Her videos often focus on racism, homophobia and transphobia which are considered “touchy subjects.” Bradley views her platform as an opportunity to reveal these issues, regardless of the feelings associated with them.

As her videos have become successful, Bradley notes that it is due to her authenticity regarding the subjects. She states that she simply gives the information and then provides her response.

Bradley’s content is mostly inspired by what her fanbase wants her to talk about. She will receive direct messages (DMs), or the “Aunt Karen” account will be tagged on a specific video or issue.

Bradley noted that it can be overwhelming to receive the issues her fans want her to cover. She emphasizes the necessity for self care to support herself mentally while doing this job.

Bradley also enjoys speaking in smaller settings, like at Elizabethtown College, to help grow her brand. While at these events, she wants others to recognize how she applies her resources for advocacy purposes.

“I want people to gain an understanding on how I’m able to utilize TikTok and further the message of unity. Also, that racism is still around and to hopefully get more people interested in seeing racism exposed,” Bradley explained.

“Aunt Karen” is planning on expanding to other social media platforms: like Instagram and YouTube. There is potential for “Aunt Karen” to receive her own television show as well. Overall, the platform that Bradley has created shows a lot of potential.

Bradley credits social media to her success and the growing “Aunt Karen” following.

“Without social media, I wouldn’t have been able to reach this many people as fast as I have,” Bradley said.
