Students prepare for Mx. Etown

When the weather starts to gradually improve, it’s a sign that the school year is coming to a close. But for Elizabethtown College, it just means that it’s almost time for another exciting night of performances courtesy of student favorite, Mx. Etown. This year’s show is primed to be one of the best yet, seeing that the field of participants is diverse with students from all over the campus, each of which have chosen a Disney Channel original movie to help bring to the stage of Leffler Chapel.

Taking place on April 21 at 7 p.m., Mx. Etown will be held in Leffler Chapel with the theme of Disney Channel original movies. While the group of participants has had the campus buzzing, the announcement of Dining Services employees Willy and Pizza Dave, as well as Mail Services employees Sandy and Tonya, as the judges only added to the excitement for the event.

Participating in the event this year is senior Gavin McCabe, who was voted Mx. Apartments. For the show, McCabe chose the Disney Channel original movie “Lemonade Mouth,” a movie that’s one of his favorites. “‘Lemonade Mouth’ is an all-time classic. I’m a big fan of ‘Camp Rock,’ ‘High School Musical,’ and ‘Teen Beach Movie,’ but those were taken,” McCabe said. “Once I realized I would be able to do ‘Lemonade Mouth,’ I dedicated myself to putting on an unforgettable performance. Shoutout Nick Wiley.”

Selected to represent the Schlosser resident hall is sophomore Phillip Patches, who chose “Wizards of Waverly Place: The Movie.” For Patches, the nomination was one that was an honor. However, it was also one that was unexpected. “It was less shock and more confusion,” Patches said. “I just didn’t really expect to be nominated for Mx. Etown in the first place.”

Mx. Etown is a fun event for all members of the College community to watch and enjoy. For those that are involved in the show, however, there’s a lot of work that goes into preparing.

Sophomore Ashley Hutton is participating in the show as a dancer in “Teen Beach Movie,” the theme chosen by senior Evan Schwab, who was voted as Mx. Quads. “We meet twice a week in the Bowers fitness room,” Hutton said. “We plan to have more frequent practices as we get closer to the show.” While practices are something that can be challenging, Hutton mentioned that they aren’t always all work and no play. “When we get together it’s more than just dancing,” Hutton said. “A lot of us were peer mentors together so it’s nice to catch up, hang out, and have some fun.”

For some of the College’s seniors, Mx. Etown is their last experience as an Etown Blue Jay. For McCabe, the opportunity to participate in the show and have the potential to win means a lot to him. “In one word? Everything,” McCabe said. “I’ll be able to celebrate my achievements and the achievements of my closest friends who have collaborated with me on the project.”

This year’s show is one that students, whether they’ll be participating in or watching, are excited for. “I’m very excited to dance alongside some amazing and talented people. We have so much fun at rehearsals and I know that our energy will be unmatched,” Hutton said. “Being able to be a part of this show with some of my best friends is amazing.”

McCabe shared in the sentiment that Mx. Etown is going to be a fun experience for all, and even shared a teaser of what those in attendance can expect. “It’s going to be fun,” McCabe said. “I don’t want to spoil anything, but I know people will be satisfied with our tribute to the movie. ‘Lemonade Mouth’ forever!”
