Elizabethtown College’s Office of Campus Recreation and Well-Being starts an active book club

Friday, March 14 marks the start of a new activity on Elizabethtown College’s campus. Whitney Crull, senior director for student involvement and well-being, finally started the program she’s been planning since she first started at Etown six years ago, a biking book club.

‘Pedal Through the Pages Book Club’ provides students with a book to read prior to their biking sessions. During the workout, everyone in the group will discuss the book while doing light cardio. Crull brings some questions to lead the club’s discussion, but the conversation can go anywhere. The book for this semester is The Most Fun We Ever Had by Claire Lombardo.

“I researched some popular book club picks like ‘Read with Jenna Book Club,’ ‘Reese’s Book Club,’ ‘Oprah’s Book Club,’ etc,” Crull said. “I read some book synopses and picked one I thought sounded fun/interesting and had good reviews.”

A total of eight students were registered for the active book club. Crull sets a goal for students to reach a certain part of the book by each meeting. The book club is only three weeks long and meets only once a week.

Kylie Evoy, an occupational therapy graduate student, was one of the eight students to join the bookclub. “Pedal Through the Pages Book Club is the perfect combination of my passions: fitness and books,” Evoy said. “I enjoyed talking about the book with the other members of the book club while moving my legs on a stationary bike. I hope Pedal Through the Pages Book Club continues at Etown for years to come!”

Registration for the book club has closed so participants had enough time to start reading the book prior to the first meeting. Students in the club are already one third of the way through the book. Students who missed registration but wish to participate in the club can be on the lookout in the fall semester for another round of the Pedal Through the Pages Book Club.

“I look forward to discussing the rest of the book and hopefully doing it again next year!” Crull said.
