This week, get to know the lovable companion of the Foster family, Domer! After losing their older dog, Trixie, in 2018, senior Judas Foster and their mom decided to look for a new pet. After being pet-less for about a month, the two of them drove to Petsmart. A local rescue was hosting an adoption event with several adorable new friends to pick from.
Foster and their mom met lots of dogs there, but two really stood out to them: a multi-colored puppy and her cream-colored sister. When Foster’s dad and two brothers arrived, the little pale puppy had crawled into their lap and fell asleep, and the family ended up taking her home.
While their old dog Trixie came with her name, the little cream-colored puppy was still little enough for Foster’s dad to pick out her name.
“My dad got to pick the name because my mom and I picked out the dog,” Foster said.
Foster’s dad already had name ideas for a white or toasted marshmallow-colored dog. If it was a boy, he would be Krypto the SuperDog, but if it was a girl, she would be Golden Domer, the Notre Dame Dog, after the mascot of his Alma Mater. For short, they call her Domer.
Domer is an energetic and loveable dog who will be turning five on April 15. She is a toasty white color with pointy ears and long legs. As for her breed, the family isn’t quite sure.
“Domer’s breed, we were told, was a lab-shepherd mix, but that was a lie. There is no lab in her outside of maybe her coloring, so we just call her a mutt,” Foster said.
Domer is quite a smart dog, knowing several tricks and commands, and she is very food motivated, which is great for training. She is a very active dog who loves to play, but is still happy to be pet whenever. Domer will chase anything from balls to Kong toys, and could play for hours if you let her. Her favorite activity is fetch, but she does have some trouble giving the toy back to be thrown again. She more so enjoys the chase.
“The trick is to hold a second toy in your hand and wait for her to drop before you throw the second toy. Her favorite toy, however, is the log that’s as wide as her jaw that she trots around the yard with,” Foster said. How cute!
