Despite Elizabethtown College being a small school compared to most of the colleges in the area, it is nearly impossible to know all of the students on campus. Each one of them has their own unique story on how they came to attend Etown, and it is important to know that their story is important. One such example is the tale of senior Destiny Troy.
Troy is from the heart of Pittsburgh, Pa. She is an alum of City Charter High school in downtown Pittsburgh, which has been recognized as one of the best performing charter schools in the United States. Being from the western side of the state, Troy has had to learn some of the culture of Central Pennsylvania.
“I thought it was Land-cas-ter,” Troy said. “Then, my roommate said that it was Lanc-as-ter, and I didn’t know about that.”
Troy found Etown because her sister is a 2018 alum. It was not her first choice college, but after some convincing, she applied and got accepted.
Now that she is here, Troy has decided to major in political science and minor in history. However, this was not the path that she had originally thought she was going to take.
“When I was in high school, I had this idea that I was going to be a journalist,” Troy said. “And then, I realized I didn’t have enough patience for that.”
While she reconfigured her life goals, Troy realized that she had an inner passion for politics. She started attending protests and rallies which sparked something inside of her. Troy discovered a love for working with people and a need to help her community.
“I would rather work in a nonprofit to be closer to the little people that make up a society rather than working with politicians that tend to be corrupt,” Troy explained.
Troy still has some time to go before she can enter the real world, so now, she’s working at the College’s Blue Bean, which proudly serves Starbucks coffee. Her job is a fairly recent one. Troy applied for the job last semester, immediately got the job and started working as soon as possible. Now, she picks up shifts whenever she can. Troy’s new employment comes from the recommendation of her roommate.
“She started working here, and she described the process,” Troy said. “I thought I could use a few extra bucks.”
Her favorite drink to make is the infamous Pink Drink, sometimes called Pinkity Drinkity by social media influencers and YouTube beauty gurus. This drink was actually a secret menu item that Starbucks added to their long menu after it grew in popularity.
On the other hand, there is one new and popular drink that Troy just is not a fan of brewing.
“The oat milk espresso,” Troy said. “I don’t know what it is about it, but whenever I’m making it, it makes me nauseous.”
When it comes to actually drinking the Blue Bean’s beverages herself, Troy is not particular about her choice of coffee. She will drink any hot latte, as long as it is made with extra foam.
Next time you see Troy working hard in the Blue Bean to caffeinate the sleep-deprived college students, make sure to say hi and maybe shy away from the oat milk espressos!
