This week, get to know junior finance major Emily Morrissey! Morrissey loves learning about finance, but she originally thought she wanted to be an accounting major. She always had wanted to do something with business but wasn’t quite sure what. She decided that accounting wasn’t quite the right fit and due to her love of following the stock market, decided to pursue finance instead. For Morrissey, Elizabethtown College just felt like the right fit! While she did receive a very nice scholarship from Etown, she also felt that the College blended well with her lifestyle and personality. Morrissey immediately felt that this was going to be her school.
Morrissey is an active member of the Gender-Sexuality Alliance (GSA) here on campus. She believes that the GSA is a great way to bridge the community together and create a more accepting environment for everyone. She encourages anyone interested to get involved.
“They also have fun activities! Like the drag show!” Morrissey said. “Who wouldn’t want to be in a club like that?”
Morrissey may not play any sports herself, but she is quite the sports fan. Her top three favorite sports to watch are football, baseball and college basketball. Her favorite teams are the Eagles for football, the Phillies for baseball and the Villanova Wildcats for college basketball. Morrissey is very passionate about these sports and loves to teach others about them.
Morrissey is originally from King of Prussia, Pa., just 30 minutes west of Philadelphia. She lives there with her parents, her dog and her cat. Her dog is a sweet brindle boxer named Apollo. Morrissey loves showing funny videos of Apollo begging for attention and being scared of his food bowl. Her cat is a brown and white tabby rescue named Lola, whois the queen of the family’s home and has taken over Morrissey’s room while she is away. Lola is a bit chunky but still very playful.
Some of Morrissey’s hobbies include the stock market, going to the gym and watching movies. Her favorite movie is the 2000 horror/thriller movie, “American Psycho.” Morrissey actually has a poster of “American Psycho” on her wall, featuring the main character Patrick Bateman, played by Christian Bale. The movie is actually based on a 1991 novel of the same name and was considered by the author to be unfilmable, but producer Edward R. Pressman was determined to release this controversial film which blended horror and dark humor which satirized the 1980s culture and the rise of consumerism.
When asked if she had any interesting talents, Morrissey laughed.
“I can touch my tongue to my nose!” she said.
Morrissey’s future goal is to find a career with which she will be happy.
“Something where I can wake up in the morning and be happy with doing,” Morrissey said. She’d like to find a job in finance that is both financially and emotionally beneficial. Hopefully, she’ll find it to be true that if you love what you do, you will never work a day in your life.
