Students of Etown: Katie Scaggs

Katie Scaggs is an outstanding student, role model and friend to all. She is who everyone at Elizabethtown College should look up to, which is why she is this week’s Student of Etown. She is a junior at the College and her major is marketing with a minor in graphic design and art.

Scaggs is from West Chester, Pa. and attended Villa Maria Academy, where she started her academic and athletic careers. She was on the track and volleyball teams in high school, and was even the team captain of her volleyball team.

Some of her volleyball accomplishments in high school include making the All District 1 3A and All-AACA Selection, All Main Line First Team honoree and Daily Local News All-Area First Team. All of her success in high school landed her a starting spot on the Etown women’s volleyball team, where she leads the team in hitting percentage.

“She has always worked tremendously hard to get better on and off the court, and does a great job of encouraging others when they are struggling,” Head Coach of the Etown women’s volleyball team Matthew Hamilton said. “She’s successful because of her work ethic, positivity and being a great teammate.”

According to the roster, Scaggs appeared in 28 volleyball matches and 93 sets last year, starting as a sophomore middle hitter. She led the team in solo blocks (22), hitting percentage (.301), total blocks (77), block assists (55) and blocks per set (.83). She was second in the Landmark Conference for total blocks, fourth in hitting percentage and total blocks and sixth in blocks per set.

Aside from her commitment to volleyball, Scaggs still makes time for other extracurriculars on campus. She is a peer mentor, a member of SAAC (Student Athletic Advisory Committee) and a tutor for marketing students.

“I love being a peer mentor because it’s rewarding to know I was a part of making new students feel welcome,” Scaggs said. “I love seeing all the new faces and excitement [first-years] have when they get here.”

Scaggs is also passionate about nutrition and taking care of her body. “I went to the gym every day in preparation for volleyball, and I started to realize it was for myself too and not just for volleyball,” Scaggs said. She thinks that making good choices for her body improves not just her physical health, but mental health too. A spiritual piece of advice from Scaggs is: “Be careful of the energy you put into the world; I want to make sure what I put out is goodness.”

Scaggs’ future plans are to find an internship in the marketing field. She said her dream job is to combine her two passions of fitness and marketing. She has a job lined up to coach a club volleyball team at Spooky Nook this winter and she works at Texas Roadhouse in the summer.

Etown students should strive to be friendly, supportive and hard working. All of these things make Scaggs perfect for this week’s Students of Etown.
