Despite Elizabethtown College being a small school compared to most of the colleges in the area, it is nearly impossible to know all of the students on campus. Each one of them has their own unique story on how they came to attend Etown, and it is important to know that their story is important. One such example is the tale of junior Hannah Sohn.
When choosing a college, Sohn had no idea where she wanted to go, so she decided to tour the school where her dad went, which was Etown. He was a student here in the late ‘70s and early ‘80s. After growing up hearing her dad talk about the school, she decided to see what the hype was about considering she only lives about 30 minutes away in Mechanicsburg, Pa.
“I just decided to tour here, and I really liked it,” Sohn said.
The thing that attracted her to Etown is the same thing that most people love: the people. Because of the College’s size, it is easy to find a niche and meet new people who will eventually become life-long friends.
“There’s a lot of opportunities to meet people through clubs,” Sohn said, “and it’s just a really nice environment.”
When she became a student here, Sohn decided to take advantage of the many clubs at Etown. She was a member of Etown’s chapter of Lighthouse and now is a devoted member to the Women’s Bible Study club.
“I feel like I try to get involved in as much as I can, and that’s a lot different than I was in high school,” Sohn said.
One way that Sohn has been branching out is that she recently joined Emotion, one of the College’s dance clubs. She did this at the insistence of her friends because she does not consider herself to be a performer. The dance is causing Sohn to be slightly nervous, but she knows she can handle it. Sohn is dancing with ten other people which she believes is a good number since she can blend in with the crowd, but her parents can also easily see her dance.
“My friends are choreographing a dance, and I’m not a dancer by any means,” Sohn said. “They wanted me to do it, so I said I’ll do it.”
Sohn is not only dedicated to her extracurriculars but also to her academics. After starting college, she realized that she needed to decide on a major. With over 150 majors, minors and concentrations offered, it can be difficult to decide on just one part. Therefore, like many, Sohn turned to her interests to help lead the way.
“I wasn’t really sure what I wanted to do,” Sohn said, “but I knew I liked the mind and talking to people, so it was a good fit for me.”
She is now a psychology major and a human services minor. After graduating, she is not quite sure where her degree will take her. One idea she has is becoming a school counselor. Sohn is also passionate about art, so she is considering using art therapy as a way to help people.
“I definitely want to work with kids,” Sohn said, “so I think working in a school setting would be good.”
Good luck to Sohn with her dancing debut in Emotion’s next show and as she works her way through psychology!
