Meet this week’s Student of Elizabethtown College: Brooklyn Torquado! Torquado is a first-year English Literature major. She is a part of many different clubs on campus, including Fine Print magazine, Outing Club, writing for The Etownian and Running Club. She also holds an on-campus job as a Student Outreach Ambassador.
Even with all of these activities and a job going on, Torquado still finds the time to study and get her work done. She has mentioned that her favorite spot on campus is the library, specifically the fourth floor where she can sit and look out the windows at campus. Apart from that, her favorite place to sit and work for her on-campus job is the conference room in the Myer Residence Hall lobby.
Along with her work, there is still time for fun. As mentioned before, Torquado enjoys running and has joined the Running Club on campus. She finds it calming. Torquado also likes seeing her improvement with running, as she “like[s] to see how far [she] can run before needing a break. It’s challenging.”
Torquado’s love for the outdoors stretches further than Running Club. She is also a part of the Outing Club and has gone to the two hikes that they’ve held so far this year. She enjoys hiking because she “love[s] the views and new experiences.” She plans to continue to go on as many hikes as she can, if not every single one.
When it came down to deciding where she would go to college, Torquado said that she “love[s] Harrisburg” which is only thirty minutes from campus! Also, “[her] cousin lives close by, so [she] applied to colleges in the area, and Etown was the best.” The proximity to her family wasn’t the only factor. Torquado mentioned that the “friendliness of the people” was one of the main reasons that she decided to commit to Etown.
As for her major, Torquado has always been a reader and a writer. It was her peers that pushed her to go with English as her major. She has said that she really enjoys learning and “wants to be in school for the rest of [her] life.” Her plan is to go from an English undergraduate degree until she becomes Dr. Torquado of English, of course. After accomplishing this, she wants to teach English as a professor. She has mentioned that it is perfect for her because she can still learn, be in school and write in her free time.
Torquado so far loves the environment here at Etown and cannot wait to see what the next four years and beyond have to hold for her.
