I’m sure the headline of this article already creates skepticism. Read it or don’t read it; it’s up to you. But I assure you, everything here is all true. No, that wasn’t meant to rhyme.
My roommates, Aries Baringer and Korinne Geiger, and I live on the third floor in Brinser Residence Hall. It’s a suite with two rooms, a bathroom, kitchen and little common space. There are four doors: one main door to the rest of Brinser, one bathroom door and two doors for each bedroom.
Around the start of the semester, my roommates and I would hear small bangs and creaks. We simply dismissed them as other people moving around Brinser. After all, we lived in Founders Residence Hall our first semester and we heard people throughout the tower. However, we weren’t expecting the sounds to be coming from our room.
“It sounded like Elizabeth and Korinne were moving furniture around the first week of school,” Baringer said.
Often the floors and walls crack after hours when no one is moving and it happens in the middle of the night, too. If it wasn’t in my room, it would be in my roommate’s room or in the common area. The sound is like a sharp smack against something.
“Sometimes it sounds like someone is opening the door into my room,” Baringer said. “Typically, I start hearing stuff as soon as the lights go off in my room.”
Baringer typically goes to bed around 11 p.m. to 1 a.m., but that doesn’t prevent stuff slamming and creaking around.
After two weeks in, our kitchen blind would slowly rise up after a few hours of pulling it down. Often we would wake up to find the blind all the way up. The shade also only stops at the top or over the sill when pulled all the way down. If it’s not down all the way, it will force it’s way up.
That’s when we determined we had a ghost. Of course, Geiger’s first question was to name the ghost. Because Brinser started out as a men’s dorm, we went with Jerry.
“I think that’s his name because he seems to respond to it,” Geiger said. “Like if we say goodnight to him, he doesn’t do anything that night.”
A week ago, I was sleeping by myself in the dorm. Baringer and Geiger went home for the weekend. I was watching a YouTube video for a while in the dark. All of the sudden, I heard a large bang on my bedroom door. I immediately shot up and grabbed my water bottle to defend myself. When no one came in and didn’t knock again, I kinda settled down, but didn’t go to sleep until hours later.
Last week, I was sleeping in Baringer’s room and Geiger was away. In the morning, I heard the sound of drawers opening and closing like Geiger had come back early.
Baringer heard the same thing, saying, “I think she’s back. It sure sounds like it.”
I got up to see her and no one was there. I texted her to see if maybe she left for class early. Geiger responded saying she hadn’t come back to the dorm yet.
After that, we haven’t heard any large events. We only have had the small creaks and knocks and the blinds.
“Honestly, I think Jerry just wants to be friends with us and help us with our classes,” Baringer said.
We haven’t had a major paranormal event and we haven’t had any voices or apparitions appear yet. However, we’ll be keeping an eye out this Halloween.
