Recipe Review: Microwave S’mores

The summer season is coming to a close and that means activities, like sitting around the campfire, will be traded for indoor movie nights as the weather gets cooler and days get shorter. While seasonal flavors like pumpkin spice and hot cocoa are around the corner, there’s no reason to leave summer sweets behind! So this week, we’re sharing a super quick and easy recipe to make s’mores in your dorm, without even needing a fire.

Start by gathering the usual s’mores ingredients: a graham cracker, a marshmallow and a snack-size bar of chocolate. Break the graham cracker in half, set it on a microwave-safe plate and place the chocolate and marshmallow on top. I recommend using a paper plate, since the marshmallow can be difficult to clean off once melted. Make sure the chocolate and marshmallow are in the center of the graham cracker and don’t hang off the edge, or the s’more will stick to the plate. Leave the top half of the graham cracker to the side; it may fall off as the marshmallow melts. Microwave it on high for only about 10 seconds. The marshmallow expands and melts quickly. Add the second graham cracker on top and it’s ready to be enjoyed!

My friends and I all find this twist on a classic s’more to hit the spot. The marshmallow of course lacks the crispness and smoky flavor a fire provides, but it still has the core elements that make s’mores so good. It even still has the somewhat messy yet fun finger food experience, so be sure to have extra napkins on hand.

If you tire of the same ingredients, there’s a handful of ways to spice up your s’mores—like using chili chocolate, for instance—that we tried out as well. Fudge-filled marshmallows can be an alternative to using bars of chocolate to save on ingredients, but the fudge doesn’t melt as readily in the microwave as it does over a fire. Giant and other grocery stores have a multitude of marshmallow options, such as Cinnamon Toast Crunch or Cookies ‘n Creme-coated, that can add an extra layer of flavor. Switching up the chocolate can also create some interesting combos. Though chili chocolate reportedly adds a bit of a bitter taste, sea-salted caramel chocolate adds a hint of salt and extra sweetness for some variety in your s’mores.

Whether you test out different combinations or prefer the classic flavors, s’mores are best enjoyed with friends. Get together and have some fun!
