Although buying a bag of snacks at the Jay’s Nest is convenient, it doesn’t give the feeling of satisfaction that making it yourself can have. Here’s an easy recipe for a snack mix you can make right in your dorm to enjoy by yourself or share with all your friends.
First, you’ll need to gather your ingredients: oven toasted rice cereal, oven toasted corn cereal, oven toasted wheat cereal, bagel chips, mini pretzels, worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, onion powder, salted butter and seasoned salt. You’ll also need two microwave-safe bowls and a spoon to stir the ingredients together.
Once you have everything you need, microwave two tablespoons of butter for about 40 seconds to melt it. Then, add a quarter teaspoon of garlic and onion powder, half a teaspoon of seasoned salt and a tablespoon of worcestershire sauce to the bowl. Mix the spices together.
Next, add one cup of each type of cereal, a cup of bagel chips and a cup of pretzels to the other bowl. Stir the seasoning into the bowl, ensuring that everything has been covered by the mixture. If any of the dry ingredients have not been coated in liquid, they may burn during the cooking process.
Microwave the snack mix on medium power for five minutes, pausing after each minute to thoroughly stir it. Then, lay out the snack mix to cool on a paper towel to absorb any excess oil.
The final result is a snack that’s perfectly crunchy and not too salty with plenty of flavor. Enjoy!
There are many ways to cater this recipe to your own tastes and needs. If you’re looking for a gluten-free option, you can exclude the wheat cereal and use a cup and a half for each of the other two varieties alongside gluten-free versions of the bagel chips and pretzels. Or, if you find that there isn’t quite enough flavor for your preferences, you can use garlic bagel chips or rye chips instead of plain bagel chips. Any of the base ingredients can be reduced or omitted, as long as you include larger portions of the remaining ingredients to keep the recipe proportional.
Another idea is adding peanuts to your snack mix for some added protein, though when trying it myself, I found that the peanut flavor was somewhat overpowering and gave the final product a bit of a sweetness that didn’t seem to go particularly well with the other flavors included.
Regardless of your preferences, this snack is sure to hit the spot for a late-night study session with the approach of finals week or to share with others in the spirit of Thanksgiving.
