It can be difficult making breakfast in a dorm room, especially if you only have a microwave. When you’ve been away from home for a few months, you could start to miss breakfasts made on a stovetop, like french toast. With this recipe, you can have warm, delicious french toast in a mug! This two-minute recipe tastes just as good as the real thing, and satisfies your craving for that cinnamon and sugar goodness.
First, you’ll need access to a microwave, a small bowl, a microwave-safe mug, 1-2 slices of bread, 1 tbsp of butter, 1 egg, 3 tbsp of milk, cinnamon to taste and vanilla extract. I’d recommend a bigger mug, so that you can use more bread, and not to add too much vanilla extract or it may become a little too sweet. You can use any bread, like french bread, if you want to stick more closely to classic french toast. It doesn’t really matter what type of bread you use, but this recipe uses sandwich bread.
You’ll want to start by cubing your bread slices. You want them roughly the same size, just to make it easier. Then, melt your butter in your mug, making sure it covers the inside. Place your bread cubes inside the mug, and fill it until it’s slightly overflowing. In your small bowl, mix together your egg, milk, cinnamon and vanilla extract together with a fork. Once it’s fully incorporated, pour the mixture over your bread cubes. Smoosh the cubes down a little and let the mixture soak into the bread.
After the mixture soaks in, place the mug in the microwave. Cook it first for one minute, then add 10 seconds at a time until the egg is cooked all the way. In most microwaves, that would be roughly one minute and 20 seconds, but it can take at most two minutes to cook. When it’s done, let it cool down slightly before eating. Now, you can add your toppings. I like to add syrup and powdered sugar, but you can also add whipped cream, more cinnamon or even chocolate chips.
After making this recipe, be sure to clean up the microwave just in case there are any spills. You can have this french toast in a mug with a glass of milk or your morning coffee. This simple recipe is great to try with friends and to enjoy when you’re missing home.
