Recipe Review: Dorm-friendly nachos

When living in a dorm, it’s notoriously difficult to cook full-scale meals with only a mini-fridge, microwave and desktop to work with as a makeshift kitchen. Not only are meals a struggle, but finding new snacks to try can also be tricky when living in a dorm. Although popcorn, chips and other treats may be classic snacks in and outside a dorm room, it may also be worth trying new snack foods to add more variety to the typical college student’s diet. Plus, knowing a wide range of meals and snack foods are the perfect way to impress visitors, and this next recipe for microwave nachos is sure to be a movie or game-night favorite.

To make nachos from the comfort of your dorm room, the most basic ingredients are tortilla chips and a thinly shredded cheese of choice. Spread an even layer of chips on a plate, followed by a thin layer of cheese. The key for this recipe is to spread the cheese evenly and thinly across the chips to avoid burning the cheese and to coat the chips evenly. Other toppings, such as sliced jalapeños, salsa or cilantro, can be prepared on another plate but shouldn’t be added immediately.

If you want to add meat to your nachos, precooked Perdue chicken shortcuts are a great option that can be easily sliced and heated in the microwave. Simply slice to desired size and microwave for about forty seconds or until heated fully. This should be set aside with other toppings until after the cheese has been melted. To do this, place the plate of chips and cheese in the microwave and heat for about 15 seconds, repeating if necessary to melt the cheese completely. Once this is finished, you can add your desired toppings. Place the completed plate in the microwave for another 15 seconds to warm the toppings, and the nachos are complete!

Although microwave nachos are a relatively simple recipe, this does require more preparation than some other dorm-friendly dishes. Cutting and heating chicken, chopping vegetables and preparing other toppings can add to both the grocery bill and the dishes. Also, it is worth noting that dorm nachos will never taste the same as the real thing. However, this recipe and its extra effort are still worth it to expand your snack repertoire, especially for enjoying with friends or during a favorite movie.
