Lately, all I’ve heard people talk about is the artist Noah Kahan, so I decided to give him a listen. Born on Jan. 1, 1997, Kahan is an American singer-songwriter who primarily makes indie/folk music. Kahan released his first single “Hold It Down” in 2017. He’s released many others between the first one and his fourth and latest album “Stick Season (We’ll All Be Here Forever)”. Personally, I’ve only heard his songs “Mess” from his 2019 album “Busyhead” and “Dial Drunk” from his newest album. Both are five-star songs that I think everyone should give a shot. I haven’t listened to much more apart from those two and some others from his most recent album, but I have a feeling they’ll all be good.
Now, I’m not the type of person to follow the hype surrounding artists, books, movies, etc., but one of his songs came on in my car while on shuffle, and let me tell you it was good. “Dial Drunk” was the song that shuffled its way onto my playlist. It’s from his 2023 album “Stick Season (We’ll All Be Here Forever)”. The song took us through him getting arrested and calling a girl from his past as his emergency phone call. He talks about all the mistakes he made in the past. Kahan takes listeners on a whirlwind of emotions through the bridge when he pleads with the officer to just wait for her to call him back. He tells the officer he’s pretty much willing to do anything including “change [his] faith, [he’ll] kiss the badge” just for the chance to wait for her to call him back. “Dial Drunk” took me on an emotional roller coaster and has given me chills every time I have listened to it so far.
I’d have to say that Kahan is most definitely worth the hype that surrounds him. As someone who likes a mix of different music genres, his music is going to be something I will listen to more when I’m in a folk phase. His songs carry an immense amount of emotion. Like I said, I haven’t heard much of his music, but based on what I hear from others, and the few songs I listened to, he’s a good singer-songwriter who deserves the attention he’s getting. So, if you’re a lover of folk, indie or you like to bounce around genres, I suggest you give Kahan a listen.
