Media Review: Therapuss with Jake Shane

What do octopi, therapy and celebrities have in common? They’re all featured on the Therapuss podcast with Jake Shane.

Therapuss, which debuted in January 2024, is a talk-show style podcast that sees Shane act as the therapist and invite celebrity guests on to discuss life, things they are “thera-pissed” about and more. Each episode ranges from 40 or so minutes to over an hour and a half.

As someone who has struggled with anxiety and other mental disorders, I relate to some of Shane’s stories he shares with the guests about his obsessive compulsions and personal issues. And, when the celebrity guests share similar stories, it makes them feel just a little more real and relatable.

Some of my favorite episodes include Tate McRae, Renee Rapp, Brittany Broski, Glen Powell and Coco Jones. Shane has such a talent for hosting and while some celebrities seem similar from their professions or music style, the episodes show just how unique and different each person is.

Listeners can also submit “Tell Me What’s Wrong” segments to tell Shane and his guest what is going on in their live, and they will “puss-scribe” a remedy, ranging from a TV show to a song.

Shane was raised in New York City before moving to Los Angeles to attend the University of Southern California. He graduated with a bachelor’s in public relations in 2022. This degree serves as a backbone to his podcast and his ability to be personable and easy to talk to for the guests on that episode.

He went viral first on TikTok for acting out fictional scenes users would recommend to him. His most popular recreation is pretending to be a glass bottle about to be pushed down the stairs, which amassed over 30 million views and 5.7 million likes.

When I go for a run, I tend to struggle to find something to listen to to pass the time, especially if it’s my longer runs like 10 mile runs. I would try to listen to music, but get bored within half an hour and not know what to listen to. When I found Shane on TikTok and heard he made a podcast I had low expectations, but decided to try it out on a run. I immediately fell in love with the episode with Renee Rapp and it felt as though I was running while listening to my two best friends talk about everything.

Therapuss with Jake Shane has seen the likes of Ross Lynch, Harry Jowsey and Katy Perry grace it’s microphones and studio throughout its tenure. The podcast, while still young in terms of age, has grown exponentially because of Shane’s demeanor, humor and how he grasps listeners from the moment he opens his mouth.

Shane will be taking his comedy on tour “Therapuss LIVE” around the United States throughout the spring, allowing listeners to view his comedy in person and witness the greatness that is Jake Shane.
