Media Review: “The Office: Superfan Episodes”

Are you a fan of the 2000’s American sitcom “The Office”? As a comedy TV lover, I’ve watched “The Office” more times than I can count on one hand. Unfortunately, there’s only so many times you can watch one show over and over again before everything becomes recognizable. The jokes are still there, but there’s no longer that anticipation for something you haven’t seen before. Well, recently, I’ve stumbled upon a Peacock exclusive series.

“The Office: Superfan Episodes” series covers seven of the fourteen seasons of the original, with added scenes to keep you on your toes. Even I haven’t been able to tell at points what was added to the episodes because they fit in so well. Some scenes are obvious and make me wonder why they cut them out to begin with. Fans get to see more interviews from all their favorite Dunder Mifflin employees as well as scenes with full office get-togethers that weren’t shown before.

The series follows a group of employees at a paper company called Dunder Mifflin. Michael Scott, regional manager, runs the Scranton, Pa. branch of the company. You get to watch the sales staff, accountants, human resource representatives, receptionists and assistants to the regional manager go about their day-to-day, average lives working at a small company. What makes the show so special is that you can put yourself into any of the character’s shoes. It allows you to relate to what is going on and makes the show even more enjoyable.

The American version of “The Office” was adapted from its British counterpart that aired in 2001. The first season of the American sitcom aired in 2005 and was an obvious copy and paste from the British version. I will admit that the first season is a little rocky, even with the additional scenes. The humor gets much better as the series goes on and the show develops its own personality. I strongly suggest that those who watch give the first season some grace, because it does get better.

For those who haven’t watched the series at all, I urge you to watch both the original series and the couple seasons of superfan episodes. I haven’t been able to make my way through all of them yet, but what I have seen is hilarious and takes me back to the first time I sat and watched the show.
