Media Review: Squid Game 2

In late 2021, the original Squid Game mini-series was released on Netflix. It captured the attention of audiences all over the world, even though the main language spoken by the characters is Korean. It’s no wonder that a sequel was soon underway, released December 2024. Season two has seven episodes which continue the first season’s storyline, following Seong Gi-hun as he enters another game. This is a perfect time to go over the plot and events of season two, so spoilers are ahead.

This season takes place a few years after Seong Gi-hun leaves the first game he played in. Gi-hun attempts to overcome his trauma from the first game, but after seeing The Recruiter again in a metro station, he decides to finally put an end to these inhumane games. Gi-hun joins up with the gangsters and thugs who used to harass him for money, as well as recruiting a familiar character from season one, police officer Hwang Jun-ho. They devise a plan to find The Recruiter and have him take them to the higher ups of the game.

They do end up finding The Recruiter, and he ends up giving Gi-hun a way to contact the frontman of the games, Hwang In-ho. Gi-hun decides to dismantle the games from the inside, so he willingly joins the games again. However, he leaves clues for his comrades to follow him to the mystery island where the games are held.

When inside the game, Gi-hun finds that the staff have changed major rules to make the game’s participation more diplomatic, essentially having all players hold a vote after each game. After the first game where Gi-hun is able to instruct the other players how to win, he is able to convince some people to abstain from participating further but fails to do so for others. They play another game, which is different from the one that Gi-hun participated in during his first run-in with the games..Afterwards, people are angry with Gi-hun, but ultimately, he finds the people who will trust him.

Some of the new contestants and friends of Gi-hun include; former marine Kang Dae-ho, former special force soldier Cho Hyun-ju, Kim Jun-hee, who is a pregnant woman who lost her money to crypto, Park Yong-sik, who is a gambler and son of another contestant, and the mother of Yong-sik, Jang Geum-ja, who joins to pay her son’s debt. A special member also joins the group, the frontman himself, acting as another player. The season ends with a rebellion against those who run the game, but it is squashed when In-ho betrays Gi-hun, effectively continuing the games.

Season three has been announced to continue off from the season two cliffhanger, with a release date sometime in 2025. With the momentum built to this point, the anticipation for season three is palpable. All that’s left for fans is to wait and hope for another amazing season.
