Media Review: Glee

After a long day of studying, working and going to class, I love to unwind and find a good show to watch. For me, I hate finding a new show and trying to get into something new. Even though I’m sure many people would agree, I recommend watching the hit 2009-2015 television series, “Glee.”

“Glee” is a singing comedy that stars Lea Michelle, Cory Montieth, Chris Colfer and many other big names of the time.

The singing satire series has many themes they play on, including gender, sexuality, race, socioeconomic status and much more.

The premise of the show is that a high school Glee club in Ohio tries to normalize performing arts, especially Glee competitions, and consistently faces challenges against the activity.

Glee club faces funding problems, lack of members and their six season enemy, Sue Sylvester, played by Jane Lynch.

Sue Sylvester, director of the cheerleaders, The Cheerios, targets the Glee club because of her long hatred for the Glee Club director, Will Schuester, played by Mathew Morrison.

The show has many interesting plot points, and I think it covers a wide variety of problems and situations. Certain episodes humorous take on these themes can be seen as offensive or insensitive, but it is mostly up to the viewer to determine that.

One of my favorite characters in the show is Santana Lopez, played by Naya Rivera. She is on The Cheerios and the Glee Club and consistently battles with her identity while determining where her loyalties lie. Her solos and plot points are some of the most interesting to me, which is why I would encourage people to give the show a shot.

“I like the representation seen in the show, I like how they show real challenges. I hate Will Schuester. Hate him,” sophomore political science major Rebecca Green said.

Will Schuester is a unique character, being a very non-traditional teacher, he makes a lot of people hate him. Another reason people do not like the show is because one of the main characters, Rachel Berry, played by Michelle, rubs many people the wrong way.

“I love the concept, but Lea Michele annoys me so much and Will is so creepy it makes me hate it,” Green said. This overall caused Green to dislike the show entirely.

Overall, I really like the show. I think it is ironic and funny but it definitely takes an open mind, and a patient one, to enjoy it.
