Job Spotlight: Etownian Editor-In-Chief

The Etownian’s own Chandler McGuire has recently been promoted from the Managing Editor to the new Editor-In-Chief! McGuire is a fourth-year English Professional Writing major with minors in Marketing and Creative Writing. She has been with The Etowian for three years, starting as the Assistant Campus Life Editor during her sophomore year in 2021. When she saw the ad for the position, she decided to apply on a whim and began working under 2023 English Literature alumni, Elizabeth Cunningham, who was the Campus Life Editor at the time.

When Cunningham moved to the Managing Editor position, McGuire took over the Campus Life Editor position. When Cunningham went to study abroad, McGuire took the Managing Editor position. She has moved up the Etownian ranks and now is at the head of the operation as the Editor-In-Chief.

“The transition was very easy. I worked my way up to where I am today and I’m so grateful for it,” McGuire said.

As the Editor-In-Chief, McGuire oversees the different sections of the Etownian. Instead of just working on one section, she assists with all sections to make sure everything is going smoothly. She does things such as making sure articles are written, layouts are submitted, pitching in to write articles if something comes up, and much more.

She is known for writing the Horoscopes for Campus Life every week, and always comes up with fun topics, sometimes aligning with her own interests. She has written articles such as, “What store at Park City Center are you based on your zodiac sign?” or “Horoscopes (Taylor’s Version): What song from the “1989 (Taylor’s Version)” album are you?”

She is always there to help when there is a problem and will do her best to help. One of her responsibilities is looking out for the Etownian employees, whether that is helping out by writing an article on a whim, or fixing a particularly frustrating layout. McGuire spends many hours perfecting the layouts before sending them off to be printed.

McGuire’s favorite thing about the Etownian is writing for Campus Life. “It’s my baby and I affectionately referred to it as the Buzzfeed of the Etownian,” McGuire said. “I always wanted to work at Buzzfeed when I was in high school, so I guess I got my wish!”

McGuire has also convinced many of her friends to apply for positions at the Etownian, including myself. When asked what she would say to people thinking about writing for the Etownian, she encourages those interested to just go for it!

“It can be a lot of work sometimes, but holding your work in your hand is so worth it. Plus, it looks great on a resume. I have gotten both of my internships, one in pharmaceutical marketing and one in proposal writing, because of my work at the Etownian,” McGuire said. As McGuire knows, the Etownian is a great place to improve your writing skills and even learn new ones, such as using InDesign. McGuire seemed very appreciative of how the Etownian allowed her to grow throughout the years. When McGuire graduates this coming spring, the Etownian will certainly miss her and all she does for us! Until then, be sure to check out her Horoscope articles every week!
