With the colder months ahead, it’s only natural to make your living area as comfortable as possible. Candles are an excellent way to make a space smell fantastic and give a little warmth. While Elizabethtown College residence halls and housing do not allow candles, there’s no harm in imagining what candle your zodiac sign would be.
Aries (March 21 – April 19): Aries are ruled by Mars, the planet of initiative and action. This force of life that Aries has makes them akin to firewood scented candles. Their vitality, full of vigor and life, is a force that cannot hope to be stopped.
Taurus (April 20 – May 20): Venus, the planet of money and love, rules over Taurus. Taurus, albeit down to earth in general, does enjoy the finer things in life. Taurus gets a willow breeze candle. Willows are ethereal and earthy, a finer part of nature than the common brush.
Gemini (May 21 – June 20): The planet of communication, Mercury, rules over Gemini. Gemini are experts at conversing but also know when it’s time to drop the subject. For that, Gemini gets a spring breeze candle, signifying use of personal freedom and wit.
Cancer (June 21 – July 22): Cancers are ruled by the planet of intuition and emotions, the moon. This gives Cancers a knack for understanding, a need to make a safe home for all their loved ones. Due to that, Cancers get a fresh cotton candle because it smells like home and has a comforting aspect to it.
Leo (July 23 – Aug. 22): The sun is the center of our solar system, so it makes sense that the sign they rule acts the same: Leo. Leos have this ability to make themselves known wherever they go. The candle sun and sand seems to fit Leo, since it is bright, bold and warm.
Virgo (Aug. 23 – Sept. 22): Mercury does not only rule over Gemini, but it also has dominion over Virgo as well. Cognition is one of Mercury’s strengths, which Virgos know all too well, as people who try to be as proactive as possible. Virgos get an ivy candle, since ivy is an opportunistic plant that takes what it can to keep going.
Libra (Sept. 23 – Oct. 22): It is no surprise that a sign as associated with love as Libra would be ruled by Venus. Libra has the grace and beauty to pass through life easily with the wind. Knowing this, Libra gets a vanilla cupcake candle since this scent is dreamy, light and airy.
Scorpio (Oct. 23 – Nov. 21): Pluto, known for intimacy and transformation, rules over Scorpio. Scorpio have a connection to the dark and painful, since they know all highs come with lows and embrace that. This means Scorpio gets a cinnamon candle, a warm essence to bring them back from the depths.
Sagittarius (Nov. 22 – Dec. 21): Sagittarius looks to their ruling planet, Jupiter, for expansion and wisdom. Sagittarius uses that wisdom to include all, to expand their connections with others. Because of Sagittarius’s welcoming aura, they get a homemade bread candle since bread has often been a communal food, empowering those who eat together to bond.
Capricorn (Dec. 21 – Jan. 20): The planet Saturn is known for its discipline and integrity, something Capricorn inherits. Capricorn has an innate desire for strength and perseverance, achieving ambitions no matter the cost. This tenacity lends Capricorn an alder candle since this tree is resilient against all that strike it.
Aquarius (Jan. 21 – Feb. 18): Uranus is a planet for liberation and those that are alternative in nature, like the sign it rules, Aquarius. Aquarius sees social barriers and walls and determines it’s their duty to bring them down. Due to this, Aquarius gets a rose candle, since roses are lovely yet have thorns if need be.
Pisces (Feb. 19 – March 20): Pisces are ruled by Neptune, the planet of spirituality and creativity. These traits describe Pisces to a tee due to their introspective nature, emotionality and artistic outlets. Since Pisces are so emotionally deep as a sign, an ocean wave candle seems fitting, waves encapsulating both the calm and the riptides.
