Halloween Activities: Finding local traditions

Halloween Activities: Finding local traditions

Fall is finally here! This is my favorite time of year; it’s the perfect weather for cozy sweaters, hot drinks and Halloween! If you’re looking for a good fall themed drink or a nostalgic movie to get you in the mood, this is a great place to start. Here are some of my favorite ways to ring in the season:

With the temperatures falling below 60’s, now is a great time to pull out those sweaters you packed away. If you need something else to block out the cold, I’d recommend stopping by the Blue Bean for your favorite latte. The Blue Bean has plenty of options for any drink to warm you up. While you’re there, you can also pick up a sweat treat, like the famous Elizabethtown College carrot cake! You also head down to the Whisk Cafe for one of their Artisan Espressos or their bottomless House Blend.

One way I get in the mood for fall is by watching my favorite fall themed miniseries, “Over the Garden Wall.” A great way to get into the mood for the season is to watch a fall or Halloween themed flick! Now’s a great time to sit down with your friends and watch both “Hocus Pocus” movies, since “Hocus Pocus 2” came out on Disney+ Sept. 30. You could also binge some of the classics like “Beetlejuice,” “Coraline,” “The Addams Family” or “The Corpse Bride.”

If you’re more of a horror fan, I’d recommend starting with the classics! Films like “Friday the 13th,” “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” “Halloween” or “Scream” will definitely put you in the mood for the spooky season. If you’re looking for a show that will keep you on the edge of your seat, put on “The Haunting of Hill House,” which is loosely based on the 1959 novel of the same name. The show came out in 2018 and has received great reviews.

There are plenty of ways to decorate your dorm for fall! One simple activity is to decorate mini pumpkins to put on your desk. You and your friends can put down newspapers, use paint, glitter and more to personalize your pumpkins! You could also decorate your dorm with strings of leaves and garlands. If you’re an expert crafter, now is a great time to make paper mache crafts!

As it gets closer to Halloween, start planning and crafting your costume! Whether you’re going to a party or dressing up with friends, planning your costume ahead of time is a great way to get excited for the holiday. You can start by searching for ideas online. Once you have an idea of what you want to be, you can start putting your costume together. I’d recommend looking at thrift stores and consignment shops are the best bet for your base pieces, but I’d look online for anything specific. Remember, it doesn’t have to be perfect! Depending on the weather, you may want to dress functionally, rather than accurately.

There are sure to be plenty of fall events this year, both on and off campus. Etown is hosting Homecoming and Family Weekend to bring together the Etown alumni, students, parents, family and friends. This is a great way to celebrate with other Blue Jays and make lasting connections.

If you want to go off campus, there are lots of local events to go to with friends! Bube’s Brewery is hosting an “Alice in Wonderland” themed costume party on Oct. 28 and 29. It goes from 8 p.m.-2 a.m. on both nights and is set to be tons of fun! With music, fire acts, drink specials and a costume contest, it is well worth the $10 cover at the door!

Whatever you decide, get into the spirit of the season! Happy fall!
