Dorm Recipes: Overnight oats

Overnight oats have taken the internet by storm in recent weeks as a quick, healthy and trendy treat to make for breakfast or as a snack. Picture-perfect snapshots and energetic tutorials have popped up all over Instagram and TikTok as this latest dish has gained popularity among foodies everywhere. However, you don’t have to be an influencer to try this recipe—overnight oats are also a quick and convenient meal to make in any college dorm. It requires very little time, few ingredients and is relatively inexpensive. Plus, there are tons of ways to add to the dish to add all types of flavors.

The most basic recipe for overnight oats is simple. A half cup of rolled oats (which can be bought in bulk for cheap) plus a half cup (give or take) of milk, water or milk substitute as the base for overnight oats. Mix these two ingredients in a mason jar or microwave-safe container and leave in the fridge overnight. In the morning, they’re ready to eat right away as a cold breakfast or can be microwaved for one or two minutes to warm. This keeps total cooking time to under five minutes!

Another perk to overnight oats is how much variety there is with toppings. Fresh or dried fruit, chia seeds and cinnamon are all popular toppings for overnight oats. Adding a tablespoon of peanut butter and cocoa powder into the oat and milk mixture before refrigerating gives overnight oats a sweet but healthy flavor. Honey or maple syrup are other options which may make mornings a little sweeter too. None of these additions take much additional preparation time, and most don’t cost too much or can be bought in bulk so they last a longer time—saving you trips to the grocery store!

Trying new recipes is a great way to broaden your cooking skills and get creative, even with the limited resources of a college dorm room. However, that doesn’t mean college students should miss out on trying the latest trend—it might lead you to finding your newest favorite recipe.
