Debate of the Week: Which is better, chunky or smooth peanut butter?

A peanut butter sandwich is a mainstay lunch item for many families, but the actual peanut butter varies across households. Some prefer chunky peanut butter, while some prefer smooth peanut butter. This debate is something that has and always will persist, so I decided to go around campus and ask what people would choose.

First, I asked some people in one of the dance groups I am a part of: E-Motion. Second-year computational physics major Kaitlynn Yorgey was the first to respond.

“Smooth all the way,” Yorgey said.

Another student, fourth-year music therapy major Zakiyah Grayson agreed, “Smooth peanut butter for sure.”

Second-year digital media production major Hannah Garinger explicitly said, “Thinking about chunky peanut butter makes me physically ill.”

Essentially, all who were in the dance unanimously agreed that smooth peanut butter was the best choice.

Next, I went to my classes and randomly asked students which they preferred. The answers I got were all smooth peanut butter as well. Third-year psychology major Abigail Marks kept it simple with, “Smooth peanut butter.” Second-year health profession major William Veith said, “Peanut butter can be so overwhelming having to bite into chunks.”

Lastly, I decided my closest friends would be a good group to ask for their opinions on this debate. The first person to respond was third-year professional writing major and Assistant Campus Life Editor Natalie Meyer. “I think, if you’re gonna let there be chunks in the peanut butter, you might as well just eat peanuts,” Meyer said.

Fourth-year computer science major Matt Sutton agreed, saying, “I don’t mind, like, preserves which are kinda like chunky jelly if you think about it.”

Third-year Japanese and political science major Lux Hileman echoed what was said, “Smooth, cause if you want chunky just eat a [expletive] peanut.”

Fourth-year professional writing major and Campus Life Editor Charlie Carberry did disagree with the majority, saying, “Chunky all the way! I love the crunch.”

As for my opinion, I am going to be the contrarian and say chunky peanut butter is my preferred choice. I grew up with a father who would make my sandwiches and peanut butter toast with chunky peanut butter, so it has a familial meaning for me. However, I do still like smooth peanut butter and do eat it when it is available. Hopefully, this debate gets you thinking about your own personal favorite preference!
