Breakfast is the most important meal of the day, so you have to choose what you eat wisely. Sweet or savory? A common question asked about our favorite snacks, but what about breakfast? Whether it’s french toast or bacon, pancakes or scrambled eggs, everyone has a preference, and the decision could make or break the rest of the day!
First, let’s discuss the options. When the sweet students were asked about what they choose for breakfast, there was a lot of talk about pancakes, waffles, donuts and french toast. The savory students said they eat any type of eggs, bacon, sausage or potatoes. Our preferences may come from the type of foods we ate growing up or even based on the dinner we ate the night before. Regardless, breakfast foods are always a favorite, no matter the type. When polled about the subject, a group of Elizabethtown College students strongly favored a sweet breakfast; the results came in 17 to 7–a landslide!
Some people claim that a salty, savory breakfast is better because it’s healthier and tends to have more protein. However, anyone could make a super sweet, protein-packed breakfast that’s just as good as the savory ones. Ultimately, we’re all going to have different go-to foods, but it’s still interesting to see which side of the argument our peers will be on.
Waking up for an 8 a.m. class means breakfast is necessary. A quick stop at the Marketplace beforehand is a must. For first-year student Jillian Spiller, a plate of chocolate chip pancakes with strawberries is the perfect start to the day.
“It adds a little bit of sweetness in the morning,” Spiller said. Sometimes all you need in the morning is something sweet to boost your energy.
On the other hand, another first-year student Teddy Bazyar claimed that savory is the way to go. For them, this is the best way to get energized before the day begins. A lot of people, like Bazyar, agree that a load of sugar first thing in the morning does not sound appetizing. That can be saved for dessert later in the day.
Personally, I like to have both in the morning, and I’m sure lots of people fall into this part of the sweet and salty spectrum too. A sweet plate of french toast with maple syrup and a side of eggs and bacon is the perfect combination. What side are you on? Are you running to the omelet station or the waffle station first?
