Club Feature: Ultimate Frisbee Club

The Ultimate Frisbee Club has a mission to share the love of the sport on campus and in the Elizabethtown community.

The club is co-ed and hopes to promote healthy and friendly athletics and create a positive way to destress during the semester. The club meets Monday through Friday each week on Brinser Field from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Their team name is the Jelly Swatters. The Jelly Swatters practice catches and throws each day to prepare for scrimmages against other colleges. They are having their first scrimmage of the semester against Kutztown University at home and will continue to represent their team through various tournaments on the East Coast.

The goal of an Ultimate Frisbee game is to get to the other side of the field without any bad passes or deflections and score against the opposing team. Normally, there are seven players on the field at a time, some throwers and some catchers. The position each player is assigned is based on their preference.

“It helps with the stresses of college,” sophomore Manny Mosby said. “It’s nice to unwind and have fun with my friends. We are all pretty close, like a little family. It’s been a great way to make me feel more at home here at Etown.”

The group often spends time together outside of practice as well.

“The team is a very positive and energetic place,” an officer of the Ultimate Frisbee Club James Witmer said.

He encourages anyone who might have an interest in Ultimate Frisbee to attend one of the club’s weekly practices.

“We are a club for all levels, and it’s encouraging to see all people being passed to and getting a chance to play,” Witmer said. The Jelly Swatters are very open to new members joining the team, regardless if they have experience in the sport or not.

Witmer also emphasized his own passion for the sport.

“When I am out there playing. There isn’t a thought of school in my mind,” Witmer said. “It helps to get those exercise endorphins going.”
The sport has been a great way for Witmer to distract from the stresses of school while hanging out with friends and getting exercise. If you have any interest in the Ultimate Frisbee Club, this link will bring you to their club page for more information.
