Are you interested in historical events, people and places? Do you want to learn about history in a hands-on manner? Do you enjoy exciting field trips to interesting local historical sites? Then Elizabethtown College’s very own History Club might be the right fit for you.
The History Club, revived last fall after a decade-long hiatus, gives students an opportunity to delve deeper into world history and explore local history through events and meetings.
The officers of the club, President Eric Schubert, Co-President Gavin McCabe, Secretary Jackson Lager and Treasurer (and Etownian Campus Life Editor) Abigail Sholes, all have their own historical names, Nixon, Napoleon, Hemingway and Caesar, respectively.
“So far, this semester has exceeded our expectations. Currently, we have more member participation and retention from previous semesters,” the leaders of the club noted on their success.
This club is attempting to create a space to share the love of history with our fellow club members and the members of our community, and creating a bond between the modern day and the past.
Soon, the club is going on a tour of Thaddeus Stevens’ house in Lancaster, put on by LancasterHistory, an organization dedicated to educating the public about Lancaster’s history, as well as preserving and exhibiting the heritage of Lancaster.
Thaddeus Stevens was an staunch opponent of slavery in the 1860’s and a United States Representative from Pennsylvania.
In terms of in-house events for the semester, the History Club runs Slides Nights, an event where members of the club can present a fun slideshow presentation on a historical event, individual or other historic fact, guest presentations, debate nights and many more events to be planned in the future.
Members of the club shape the future of the club by discussing and suggesting events, presentations and trips.
“We love history, and if any members of the student body do too and want to join us, they should email History Club so Secretary Lager can put them on the email list!” concluded the leaders of the club. “And if any members of the faculty or community have any ideas or want to reach out to create fun opportunities for our club, they should shoot us an email!”
