Business Review: Sal’s Pizza

Business Review: Sal’s Pizza

When you’re craving some Italian food after the Marketplace has already closed for the night, there are several options available around campus. Located just up the road at 2345 South Market Street, Sal’s Pizza offers the classic pizzeria atmosphere and food to make you feel at home.

I’ve been to Sal’s a handful of times, usually ordering pizza to be delivered to my dorm to share with friends, but I’ve also chosen to dine-in. The restaurant had plenty of comfortable seating, and the staff was pleasant with quick service.

Their pizza is the best from any local pizzeria I’ve eaten at. The crust is crisp, and there’s a nice balance of cheese and sauce without it being too greasy. It’s also fairly reasonably priced, though it obviously costs a bit more for delivery.

Sal’s also offers an extensive menu beyond just pizza, with all the expected Italian fare. In addition to the pizza, I’ve tried two different types of wraps, both of which were served with a small bag of Herr’s brand chips. The first was the buffalo chicken wrap, which I really enjoyed. It had a ton of flavor and was spicy enough without overwhelming the other ingredients.

The second wrap I tried was the breaded chicken wrap. The menu didn’t list that it had mayonnaise on it (I happen to despise mayo), so I didn’t ask for it to be made without it, but unfortunately it was included. However, there was only a small amount on one side, so it wasn’t too bad, and there was plenty of onions, tomatoes, lettuce and chicken to hide the sauce.

Both wraps were much larger than I was expecting, so while they did cost around $12 for the full meal, I had some left over for lunch the next day or a midnight snack.

This week, I decided to order from Sal’s with third-year public health major and Campus Life writer Cassidy Rohrman, who wanted to try the chicken tenders. She was somewhat unsatisfied, claiming they were missing something, so she recommended using the barbecue sauce they come with or another sauce you like. She did, however, like the fries that were included with the meal.

We also decided to order the Nutella dessert pizza. It was essentially a regular pizza dough base covered in a Nutella spread, with a sprinkling of powdered sugar on top. It admittedly doesn’t look incredibly appetizing, but it tasted incredible. The dough helps balance the sweetness of the rest of the pizza, and it works really well with the Nutella.

If you do decide to order delivery from Sal’s, I suggest placing your order a little in advance of when you want to eat. Rohrman and I didn’t decide on what we wanted until the height of the dinner rush, around 5:30 p.m., so we ended up waiting about 40 minutes for the food to be made and another five minutes for the delivery. Personally, I felt it was worth the wait, but I was definitely getting hungry!
