Business Review: Folklore Cafe and Co

Let’s face it: we all love a warm, aesthetic café to study, read or simply escape from the chaos of campus. Soft lighting, quiet conversations and mouthwatering smells of rich espresso fill the air, making it the perfect place to relax and unwind. It’s as if you walked straight into a beautifully written Taylor Swift song. You think to yourself, where could I find such an idyllic spot?

Only a five minute drive—or even a short walk—from campus sits Folklore Coffee and Company. Located in the heart of downtown Elizabethtown, Folklore Coffee is an especially popular spot for students. The picturesque café is right across the street from the Elizabethtown, Pa. sign, welcoming visitors into town. A delectable assortment of pastries lines the front counter as you walk in, their distinct aromas filling the air with sweetness. My personal favorite is the thickly sliced coffee cake. The cake’s buttery crumb layered with cinnamon sugar makes it the perfect addition to any coffee or tea.

I was first introduced to Folklore on one of the best days of the year: Jay Walk. A couple weeks later, after the stress of classes had commenced, I returned with a good friend on a chilly Friday afternoon. We walked inside and immediately noticed their fall flavors had been released. And if you know me, you know I cannot pass up a good cinnamon or pumpkin spice latte.

However, after exploring the menu, I decided to try something new and somewhat unlike my usual style of drink. I ordered the spiced apple cider, along with a big slice of coffee cake, of course. The warm spiced cider is made from locally grown apples from the Masonic Village. It is packed with flavor, a perfect mixture of tart and sweet. Each steaming mug of comfort is topped with frothy foam and a hearty dash of cinnamon.

The café becomes especially crowded on the weekends. If you do decide to make a trip, make sure to get there early enough to get a good table, preferably by the window! The downtown streets are decorated for fall with pumpkins and hay bales; this time of year is perfect for grabbing a cappuccino or mug of cider and cozying up with a good book.

Students love heading down to Folklore Coffee for a break in between classes or on the weekends. First-year student Riley Hennelly recalls how welcoming the environment of Folklore Coffee felt. She stated, “I sat right by the window, which was a perfect spot for a rainy day.” Hennelly ordered the s’mores frappuccino, an interesting twist of flavor on the cold beverage.

If you tend to prefer winter flavors over fall, don’t worry–these are sure to be released within the next few weeks as the weather starts to get cooler. Personally, I’m hoping for the classic peppermint or even white chocolate mocha flavors.

So, next time you make a trip to lovely downtown Elizabethtown, be sure to treat yourself to a tasty sweet and drink at Folklore Coffee and Company.
