With the recent bouts of warm weather over the past few weeks, I’ve found myself turning more and more frequently to the music from the band Surfaces. The group, which is widely known for its hit song “Sunday Best,” perfectly blends multiple genres of music, making them a unique group whose music perfectly complements the feeling of springtime.
I first heard of Surfaces in 2020 when I came across a friend’s Instagram post which featured the song playing in the background. It was, of course, “Sunday Best.” I found myself interested in the song because its upbeat tone, lyrics and unusual (for the time) instrumentals were exactly what I needed to boost my mood at the start of the pandemic. Since then, “Sunday Best” has been a staple for all my best Spotify playlists, though I wouldn’t explore much of their other music until much later.
Recently, however, I’ve been listening to Surfaces more and more often. Their music is the perfect soundtrack for an early spring walk, driving with the windows down or outdoor studying. The songs are all unique, but have a similar blend of sound which makes it obvious they are by the same artist. Their newest album, “Pacifico,” is particularly worth checking out (in my opinion). The lyrics portray perfect warm-weather feelings, especially as many of us are starting to daydream about summertime adventures and trips to the beach. I’ve had the song “June” on repeat these past few weeks!
While the sound of Surfaces alone is enough to make anyone a fan, the album covers are also extremely fitting for the season. Simplistic and pretty, their album art could easily be mistaken for an aesthetic phone background or relaxing wall poster. A vinyl of any Surfaces album would be a welcome addition to any record collection. The band doesn’t need flashy or wild album art, and it doesn’t match their brand, either. For busy people, the smoothness of Surfaces is a welcome and relaxing, yet upbeat, change of pace.
For those of you who haven’t had a chance to check out this artist, don’t hesitate to give them a chance! Whether you’re looking for a new favorite band, a study soundtrack or a few songs to add to your latest playlist, Surfaces’ unique sound fits a number of categories. With Surfaces, you can appreciate all the good things Spring has to bring, and maybe even discover a new music genre along the way!
