The following article is part of an April Fools’ Edition of The Etownian: the stories are fake the but interviews/quotes are real.
Over the past decade or so, the world has been captivated by numerous internet debates. One of the most infamous internet debates was the “what color is the dress?” debate; is it blue and black or white and gold? Today, we have a new debate that might rival that one in terms of popularity. This debate has garnered a lot of attention over the internet in recent weeks.
What is it? The door versus wheels debate. Which of them are there more of in the world: wheels or doors? It seems like a silly debate, but the world has gotten profoundly serious about debating the topic.
Of course, the definition for doors and wheels can be stretched when debating the topic. What constitutes a door and what constitutes a wheel? The basic definition for each of these will be taken from the Webster Dictionary. A door is defined as “a usually swinging or sliding barrier by which an entry is closed and opened.” As for a wheel, that is defined as “a circular frame of hard material that may be solid, partly solid or spoked, and that is capable of turning a full rotation on an axle.”
To settle this debate, I asked the Elizabethtown College community to vote and give their opinions of what they think there are more of in the world: wheels or doors. Based on the responses, most of Etown believes that there are more wheels than doors in the world. A little over 77 percent believe that there are more wheels, while the remaining 22.2 percent believe that there are more doors.
A few members of the College shared their anonymous opinions following the survey. One person said, “Case for wheels: most hot wheels cars do not have functional doors, and 4 billion of them have been made.” Someone also backed their opinion that there are more wheels saying, “Think about it, look at all the wheely chairs out there, 18 wheelers, motorcycles,
2 door cars that have 4 wheels, houses on wheels, so come at me if you say there are more doors.”
There were also opinions shared that argued there to be more doors than wheels in the world.
In an interview, one Etown student shared a strong opinion on the debate. First-year Phillip Patches had a remarkably interesting opinion on the topic. “There are probably more wheels than doors in the world. However, if you think about it from a more creative standpoint and include more options as to what can qualify as a door, then doors win,” he said.
There is an overwhelming number of people that believe there are more wheels than doors in the world. I have the same opinion. Using the dictionary definition of each word, most people think that there are more wheels, but as people have said, you can be more creative with the idea of what a door is. Overall, there are arguments for each side of the debate that could certainly be persuasive. So which side do you support: wheels or doors?
