Recipe Review: Hot Dog Gelatin

This week, I’d like to introduce you to one of my favorite simple recipes—hot dog-flavored gelatin. Unfortunately, this recipe does require access to a stove, so you may have to visit your residence hall’s kitchen. However, I’d say it’s definitely worth the hassle!

For this recipe, you’ll need a pot of water, at least one hot dog and a packet of gelatin. You’ll also need one or two extra bowls for mixing.

Start by boiling the hot dog. Bring the pot of water to a boil, then drop in the hot dog. Let it cook for about five minutes.

Remove the hot dog from the water and set it aside. Turn off the stove burner and let the water cool. When it reaches room temperature, transfer the water to a separate bowl or container and place it in the fridge until it is cold.

Pour about a quarter cup of the water into a new, microwave-safe bowl or into the original pot. Add in the gelatin packet. Make sure the gelatin is distributed as evenly as possible, as it won’t set correctly if it’s clumped together. Let the mixture sit for five to 10 minutes to begin dissolving.

Reheat the mixture, either in the microwave in 10-second intervals or on the stove over low heat. Once the gelatin has fully dissolved and the mixture has become liquid, remove the mixture from the heat and add an additional two to three cups of the hot dog water. Let the mixture cool.

After reaching room temperature, transfer the mixture to the fridge again. Let it set for about six hours, then enjoy!

This recipe yields a delicious savory treat that is sure to make almost anyone happy. The hot dog flavor is subtle, but can be enhanced by boiling a greater number of hot dogs or even dicing one of the hot dogs and sprinkling the pieces into the setting gelatin. You could mix in some of your favorite condiments, though you may need to adjust the amount of water you use as the viscosity of ketchup or mustard might affect the gelatin’s ability to set.

If you don’t have any access to a stove to boil the hot dogs, you can also try using the brine from jarred or canned hot dogs and using the microwave after adding the gelatin. However, I haven’t personally tried making it this way, so I can’t say if the end result will be as tasty.

Hot dog gelatin is great to enjoy on your own or to bring to parties. Plus, pouring the mixture into festive molds before setting it in the fridge can make this recipe even more fun for themed events.
