Rating quarantine hobbies

Now, it’s been a year since COVID-19 was declared a global pandemic by the World Health Organization and for all the time we’ve spent socially distanced, coping methods are key to thriving as a college student in a pandemic. So, as a self-proclaimed expert on quarantine hobbies (as it seems as though I’ve collected them all like Pokémon cards), let’s rate them.

Painting… It’s what I started my quarantine with. Yes, I literally coped with March 2020 by having a paint night via Skype. This is a solid Lake Placida. It could be better – if I practiced more, plus practiced sketching – and watercoloring books upgrade it to a Blue Bean immediately. Bob Ross paint nights though? A solid Truman.

Gardening came next. And by gardening, I mean, I raided my local Lowe’s for succulents and then raided my local nursery for other plants, like aloe vera. What can I say, I’m a Taurus. I naturally have a green thumb. Anyways, gardening? A solid Masters Minerals Gallery – it takes skill to garden, but it also takes skill to kill succulents (sorry to all the deceased succulents and my condolences to the former plant parents – maybe join plant TikTok).

Cooking and baking is another hobby I’ve discovered. Like, we can’t all survive on depression meals, Karen. Sometimes you’re socially distancing and craving some of your favorite restaurant foods. Cooking and baking is tedious though. Cooking is more of a Bower’s Center for Sports, Fitness and Well-Being, whereas baking is a solid Myer.

And reading… I found out “Swarm” by Scott Westerfeld was released and I realized how behind I was on the Zeroes series, as well as reading in general (thanks college for making me not want to read for two years). Anyways, we’re reading again. It’s been four months and I’m already well over 50 books. I am practically a bookworm. Seriously, just let me live in a library and find out all the lore about all my favorite books. This is off the scale – oh, I have to rate it, Aprille? Okay, fine, another Truman!

Working out is like the old mascot the Galloping Grey Ghosts trying to be the new mascot the Blue Jays. It’s trying too hard, albeit necessary to make some form of progress. We could do better than this for quarantine hobbies, but if you’ve been working out like Korra in “Legend of Korra,” then be your best a “Avatar” reincarnation.

(Seriously, if you haven’t watched “Avatar: the Last Airbender” or “Legend of Korra,” do better.)

Now, crochet. That’s been a new hobby of mine. I learned in January and let me tell you, it’s fun. There’s nothing like waving around a crochet hook – which feels like a wand, so, honestly, live your best life, magical beings – with some yarn on it. What feels better than making things? Nothing, that’s it. This is a solid Truman, and extra bonus points for how productive you feel after making granny squares. Now, onto crocheting my next granny square and learning more stitches…

We all remember making bracelets, especially for our friends. Whether they’re friendship bracelets or beaded bracelets, they’re fun to make. There’s nothing like a fashionable accessory that you made yourself. Now, bracelets can be tedious to make and for that, I have to give it a solid new mascot the Blue Jays.

Okay, so, I think I’ve collected all of the hobbies (and maybe I should paint some trading cards for all my hobbies). Sometimes you just need a good hobby to cope with a global pandemic – or a whole bunch of hobbies. Listen, they give me serotonin (especially granny squares, those make me feel really productive).
