The Elizabethtown College Blue Jays have made an unexpected run in this year’s March Madness basketball tournament.
Due to a unique clause in NCAA rules, the Division III Etown team was granted an invitation to compete in March Madness this year.
Everyone doubted the Blue Jays, as they had a disappointing regular season, finishing 8-16. However, the team has turned around and is making a huge run in this year’s tournament. The team was a 16 seed and had to take on the strong Gonzaga Bulldogs, a team filled with top recruits and NBA talent. Everyone was expecting a blowout and the Bulldogs were even 22-point favorites going into the game.
But the Blue Jays upset the Bulldogs in an intense overtime finish. This was just the second time in March Madness history when a 16 seed upset the one seed.
After this, the Blue Jays faced Memphis, and were once again predicted to lose by a large margin. But the Blue Jays proved to be a strong team and upset Memphis, winning by 12 points. The Blue Jays then went on to beat Arkansas to advance to the Elite Eight. This would prove to be the biggest game of the tournament, as the winner would advance to the Final Four. Etown pulled off another upset, winning 74-70.
“I was excited to hear my school would be in March Madness this year, but I didn’t expect them to go this far, or even win just one game. It has been so much fun watching them advance through the tournament and beat some of the strongest teams in college basketball. When they beat Duke, I was truly speechless,” Etown student Morgan Smith said.
Etown now will play the North Carolina Tar Heels in the Final Four. This will be the biggest stage than any Etown sports team has ever played on. Millions of people will see the Blue Jays take on the Tar Heels.
The winner of this game will go on to face the winner of the Kansas versus Villanova game. Everyone at Etown will be watching, along with millions of other people, to see if the Blue Jays can make history this March.
