The following article is part of an April Fools’ Edition of The Etownian: the stories are fake the but interviews/quotes are real.
Earlier this week, before an injury, the Easter Bunny ran in a footrace against the mascots of the Etownian, including Marvin the Monkey, Domino the Horse, Cate the Cat, and Rory the Frog. The race also included the Galloping Gray Ghost. The Galloping Gray Ghost used to be Elizabethtown College’s mascot, before he was replaced by the Blue Jay. Now, he is the number one ghost that is often caught haunting campus.
The race started out on a cold day and it took place around Lake Placida. Each participant was to run five laps around the lake. The winner was supposed to receive a trophy and 25 complimentary Jay Bucks.
The race began with the sound of the Alma Mater at noon. The Easter Bunny had a very early lead by the end of the first lap, followed by Marvin in second place and Domino in a very close third. Domino was followed by Cate . Rory and the Galloping Gray Ghost were bringing up the rear.
By lap two, things started to change. The Galloping Gray Ghost passed Rory and Cate . The Galloping Gray Ghost and Domino were neck and neck by the beginning of lap three.
In the third lap, the Easter Bunny was still in the lead, followed by the Galloping Gray Ghost and then Marvin, who was followed closely by Domino. Cate , and Rory were bringing up the rear. Rory tried to swim through the lake, however, the water was too cold for him, so he leaped out and continued hopping.
By lap four, the Galloping Gray Ghost got disqualified for cheating. The ghost was galloping over the water instead of running around the lake. As he was galloping on the water, he did not technically get wet. Lucky the Leprechaun, who was refereeing, caught the ghost’s cheating, and disqualified the ghost immediately. It was then a close race between Marvin, Domino and Cate. At this point, Rory was still in last place.
By lap five, the Easter Bunny and Domino were neck and neck. Domino finished in second place by less than five seconds. Marvin finished in third place, and then went to go play in the trees. Rory came in fourth place, and because the ghost was already disqualified, got an automatic last place. Overall, the race was a very exciting one, and there was talk at the very end of maybe doing this again next year.
